Gibbons Leads Gettysburg Past McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md.  Senior Emily Gibbons(Annapolis, Md./Severn School) scored all of her game-high 24 points in the final three quarters of play as Gettysburg College moved into a tie for first place in the Centennial Conference standings with a 66-53 victory over McDaniel College Wednesday night.
 
With the victory, Gettysburg (13-2, 9-1 CC) tied idle Muhlenberg College (14-1, 9-1 CC) for the top spot with half of the conference schedule in the books.
 
Gibbons did not take a shot and had just two rebounds following the first quarter of play. The senior lit up the final three frames, ending with a 12-point fourth quarter. She also grabbed 17 rebounds for her 34th career double-double, tied for third in program history. Gibbons moved into fourth on the program's all-time rebounding list with 881.
 
Junior Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) added 14 points and seven rebounds and sophomore Ashley Gehrin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) tallied eight points. Senior Kendra Meredith (Boyds, Md./Northwest) dished out six assists and became just the 14th Bullet to record 200 helpers in a career.
 
Melanie Yeomans led McDaniel (6-9, 4-6 CC) led McDaniel with 13 points, while Liv Storer and Halle Burgess each scored 10 points.
 
A back-and-forth opening quarter ended with a three-pointer by Caroline Ward which gave the hosts a 16-15 advantage. Gibbons put the Bullets back in front with a pair of lay-ups in the second quarter and sophomore Kiera Cesareo(Randolph, N.J./Randolph) knocked down a three-pointer to push the lead to 23-19 with 4:41 to go. Gettysburg would go into the locker room ahead 33-26 at the half.
 
The visitors carried the momentum through to the third quarter. Gettysburg out-scored McDaniel 19-10 and held a decisive 13-2 rebounding advantage in the period. Four quick points by Gibbons at the start gave the Bullets a double-figure lead for the first time and it reached a game-high 18 (52-34) on a jumper by sophomore Olivia Briggs (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) just before the end of the quarter.
 
Gettysburg's lead did not dip below 12 in the final 10 minutes of play.
 
The Bullets finished over 50 percent shooting from the floor for the third time this season, hitting 28-of-54 field goals (51.9 percent) overall. The team also held a 46-20 lead in rebounds and out-scored the Green Terror 38-16 in the paint.
 
Gettysburg visits Washington College this Saturday at 3 p.m.
