UNION, N.J. (January 3, 2018)  – Senior Megan Brown nearly recorded a triple-double with a game-high 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists and nine different players found the scoresheet as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team rallied to defeat Elmira College 72-62 Wednesday afternoon in both schools' Empire 8 Conference opener.

Senior Anna Toke added 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds and freshman Sam Winter added 11 points and seven boards for Stevens, who won its 11th straight matchup over the Soaring Eagles. Stevens has won three of its last four games to improve to 4-5 on the year and 1-0 in E8 play. The Ducks have won five straight Empire 8 openers. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday night in Hoboken, but was postponed after a water main break forced the closure of Canavan Arena and the Schaefer Athletic Center. The contest was relocated to Harwood Arena on the campus of Kean University.

Danielle Cleary scored 15 points to lead Elmira. The Soaring Eagles have lost two of their last three games to fall to 8-2 and 0-1 in league play.

Stevens held Elmira's Rachel Vespucci to a season-low seven rebounds. The junior forward came into the game averaging a conference-leading 10.2 rebounds per game.

Turning Point

• After trimming a nine-point first-half deficit to two at halftime, Stevens scored the first seven points of the third quarter to reclaim a 39-34 lead.

• Toke began the pivotal stretch with a putback basket and drew a Vespucci foul that sent the Lincoln Park, New Jersey native to the line with a chance to give Stevens its first lead since early in the first quarter.

• Toke sank the ensuing free throw, giving the Ducks a 35-34 edge. The senior center is 32-for-34 (94.1%) from the free throw line this season.

• Brown converted a layup and freshman Maddi Hahn scored on a fast-break layup to push the Stevens lead to five.

Inside the Numbers

• A 19-12 edge over the final 20 minutes led to a 43-39 edge on the glass for Stevens.

• Four players reached double digits as Stevens scored a season-high 72 points.

• Stevens held the edge in second-chance points (13-11), points off the bench (14-10), points in the paint (38-24) and fast break points (8-0).

• Stevens shot 45.7 percent in outscoring the Soaring Eagles 40-28 in the second half.

• Brown's eight assists marked a new career-high.

• Toke has blocked two shots in eight of nine games this season.

• The Ducks forced 21 turnovers for the second consecutive game. Toke led the team with four steals and seven different players recorded at least one.

• Freshman Lily Taeuber made her collegiate debut and scored the first points of her career with a second-quarter layup.

• "I was proud of the way we controlled the boards in the second half and took care of the ball. We need to do that for 40 minutes as the first half was ugly."
