Seniors Lead the Way as Smith Knocks WPI From Ranks of Unbeatens

Northampton, MA --- Junior Lauren Bondi (Burnaby, British Columbia) scored 22 points to lead host Smith to a 76-45 victory over WPI in a NEWMAC Women's Basketball matchup Saturday in Ainsworth Gymnasium.

The Pioneers improve to 5-2 and hand the Engineers (5-1) their first loss of the campaign. Both teams are now 1-1 in conference play.

Senior Paige Marquez (San Francisco, CA) totaled 16 points and classmate Meghan Holland (Atherton, CA) posted 11. Junior Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, GA) hauled in 16 rebounds to go with eight points and senior Amanda Barriscale (Mill Valley, CA) pulled down nine boards.

Senior Madison Beck (Syracuse, NY) was the only Boynton Hiller in double digits with 10 points. Classmate Brittney Lambert (Hudson, NH) was next with nine. Senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA), who was held to five points, handed out a career-high eight assists as she and fellow senior Maura Buckley (Melrose, MA) each registered five rebounds.

The game was even at 19 following the first 10 minutes of action. Smith went on to win the last three frames 15-6, 21-15 and 21-5.

Smith began to pull away with a five-point spurt to begin the second. The run was capped by a jumper by Barriscale with 7:11 on the scoreboard. Lambert responded with a 3-pointer only to have the hosts enjoy a pair of eight-point advantages and head into the break with the 34-25 margin. The Pioneers led by double digits the rest of the way following a jumper by Marquez at 7:46 in the third. The lead was as much as 17 twice in later in the frame. A layup by freshman Elle Jo Whalen (Woodinville, WA) with 3:00 left in the game marked Smith's largest lead of the game (74-42).

WPI entertains No. 1/2 Tufts Wednesday at 6pm. Smith is also back on the court Wednesday with a 7pm home NEWMAC matchup versus Coast Guard.
