MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College erased a 17-point deficit en route to a 70-67 win over visiting Transylvania University Sunday (Nov. 19) afternoon in women's basketball action. Marietta improves to 2-0 on the young season, while Transylvania falls to 0-1 overall.

"Transylvania is a really good team and they came in here and took it to us in the first quarter," Marietta head coach Kole Vivian said. "I was happy we finally got in a groove on defense in the second quarter and it carried over to our offense. Amisha did a great job of handling their pressure and our posts started getting it going inside."

Transylvania scored 11 points off of Marietta turnovers in the first quarter to build a 22-8 lead. TU started the second quarter with a three-pointer from Shelby Boyle for its biggest lead of the game, 25-8.

Marietta turned the tables on Transy in the second quarter. MC's defense held Transylvania scoreless for nearly seven minutes and cut the TU lead to one, 25-24. A layup from Amisha Herd in the final seconds of the period put Marietta in front, 29-28, and capped a 21-3 Marietta run.

The backcourt duo of Alexis Enochs and Corrie Burkhardt took over the game in the second half and propelled Marietta to the win. Enochs scores 13 of her 17 points after halftime, while Burkhardt added 12 points in the second half.

Enochs finished a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor and had 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Burkhardt was 7-of-9 from the floor and notched 17 points, nine boards and seven steals on defense.

Herd chipped in with 13 points, five rebounds and six assists. Freshman Laura Pullins came off the bench to score nine points.

A layup from Pullins with 4:00 left in the third quarter gave Marietta a 16-point lead, it's biggest of the game, 49-33.

Transylvania managed to get within three points twice in the fourth quarter, but each time Marietta answered with a basket on the ensuing possession.

"We had a brief lull to start the fourth quarter, but we were able to close the door," Vivian said. "We know we have to be better in some spots, but I am happy with our growth so far."

Celia Kline hit a three-pointer as time expired and led Transylvania with 18 points. Boyle finished with 11 points, while Ashton Woodard and Taylor Jackson added 10 points each.

For the game, Marietta shot 44.3% (27-of-61) from the floor, 38.5% (5-of-13) from three-point range and 61.1% (11-of-18) at the free throw line. Transylvania was 25-of-62 (40.3%) from the floor, 10-of-33 (30.3%) behind the arc and 7-of-12 (58.3%) at the line.

Transylvania edged Marietta on the glass, 42-38. Transy committed 24 turnovers, while Marietta turned the ball over 15 times.

Up next for Marietta is the 33rd annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot. Carnegie Mellon, Denison and Wittenberg join the Pioneers for the annual post-Thanksgiving event.

Marietta plays Denison at 6 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 25), followed by Wittenberg and Carnegie Mellon at 8 p.m. On Sunday (Nov. 26), Denison and Carnegie Mellon square off at 1 p.m. with Marietta and Wittenberg taking the court at 3 p.m.
