Anderson, Green Lead Oxy to Win in Opener

More news about: Occidental

LOS ANGELESTriana Anderson and Shariah Green led the Occidental women's basketball team to a win in its first official game of the season with a 75-69 victory over La Sierra at Rush Gym on Saturday.

Anderson, a Second Team All-SCIAC selection last year, showed off her maturity on the court, finishing with 22 points on 7 for 9 shooting. She had some key buckets in the second half to help Oxy keep its distance and spearheaded a big first-half run in transition that put Oxy in front 22-12 at one point during the beginning of the second quarter.

With just a 31-29 halftime lead, the Tigers fed Green down low to get more easy baskets in the second half. She scored 17 points on 6 for 12 from the field and 5 of 8 from the line.

Green also had success pulling the ball off the boards when she didn't get a pass, finishing with six of her eight rebounds on the offensive end, many of them for easy put backs.

Oxy took its biggest lead of the game at 52-37 with 3:30 left in the third quarter.

La Sierra chipped away at Oxy's lead and hung around. The Golden Eagles were particularly successful when Green missed time on the court with her third and fourth fouls.

Both team's struggled against the other's zone pressure, turning the ball over 20 times apiece.

Elise Mejia and Mikayla Stitt did the bulk of the work for La Sierra. Mejia had a team-high 19 points, including a three, 3-pointers and Stitt scored 18 with a pair of threes.

Alyssa Ramlochan chipped in eight points and nine rebounds, Tala Ismail had eight points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals, and Emily Leonard added nine points for Oxy.

Season Impact: The Tigers win their first official contest of the year, moving to 1-0.

La Sierra falls to 0-6.

Next Game: Oxy has Sunday off and then returns to the court with another home game against Bethesday at 5 p.m.
