BALTIMORE – The Gettysburg College women's basketball gave Division I UMBC all it could handle for three quarters in an exhibition Tuesday night, but the Retrievers out-scored the Bullets 36-7 over the final 13:26 to pull away for a 72-45 victory.

The setback does not count against Gettysburg's regular-season record as a Division III institution, but UMBC (1-2) received credit for its first win of the campaign.

Junior Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) led the Bullets with 14 points. Senior Emily Gibbons(Annapolis, Md./Severn School) turned in eight points and 15 rebounds.

Facing UMBC in an exhibition for the second consecutive season, Gettysburg kept the game close in a first quarter where offense was at a premium. The Bullets took an 8-4 lead on a lay-up by freshman Meredith Brown (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry). The Retrievers tallied the final eight points of the quarter to retake the lead.

The offense picked up in the second quarter as Gettysburg out-scored UMBC 15-13. The hosts jumped in front by seven late in the period before a quick 5-0 run by the visitors sliced the margin down to two (25-23) entering the half.

Dorshimer gave Gettysburg it's final lead of the game with a jumper to make it 33-31 with 6:39 left in the third quarter. The Retrievers scored the next six points, but Dorshimer kept the Bullets within striking distance with a pair of free throws to set the score at 39-38 with 3:26 remaining in the third period.

UMBC mounted a furious run over the next 10 minutes, out-scoring the Bullets 25-1 to surge in front 64-39 with just over two minutes remaining.

Gettysburg dominated the glass 51-40, but the Bullets hit only 16-of-59 (27.1 percent) field goals, including just 3-of-22 (13.6 percent) from beyond the arc. UMBC out-scored the Bullets 36-20 in the paint and forced 26 turnovers.

Laura Castaldo led the Retrievers with 18 points and eight rebounds. Melody Van Ness added a dozen points, while Te'yJah Oliver scored 10 points.

Gettysburg officially begins its season against Lehman College in the opening game of the University of Mary Washington Tournament at 5 p.m. this Friday.
