William Paterson Women’s Basketball Sees Season End in NJAC Tournament First Round, 91-71

GLASSBORO, N.J. – Fifth-seeded William Paterson (14-12, 9-9 NJAC) dropped a 91-71 decision at fourth-seeded Rowan (18-8, 11-7 NJAC) in the first round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Women's Basketball Tournament Feb. 18.

 

WP trailed 18-14 at the end of the first quarter and found itself down by a 30-18 count with 4:11 left in the second, but the Pioneers put together a 15-2 run to end the half and take a 33-32 advantage into the locker room. Sophomore guard Ashley Castillo (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) had seven of her nine first-half points during the burst, and sophomore guard Julie Rovito (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) scored six of her 10 tallies during the final three minutes.

 

The Profs took control during the third quarter, engineering 11 straight points for a 56-41 edge with 1:51 on the clock, and Rowan's lead never dipped below 13 for the remainder of the contest.

 

Castillo paced William Paterson with 16 points and three steals, while Rovito finished with 15 tallies. Junior forward Tori Woetzel (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) added nine points and three blocks to her career-best 15 rebounds, freshman guard Gabby Harris (South River, N.J./South River) had 12 tallies and four assists, and senior guard Ashley Palmieri (Edison, N.J./Metuchen) collected 11 points.

 

Freshman guard Alexis Kriley led the Profs with 24 points. Senior guard Anyssa Sanchez posted 23 tallies and four assists, while junior guard Summer Crilley added seven assists and 10 rebounds.

 

Rowan turned 34 Pioneers turnovers into a 27-15 advantage in points scored off the miscues, and out-scored WP 46-32 in the paint.
