WORCESTER – Junior Brittney Lambert (Hudson, NH) established a new career-high with 17 points off the bench, including five threes, as WPI defeated visiting Wellesley, 62-42, Saturday afternoon in the program's annual Play4Kay game. With the win, the 10th-ranked team in the initial NCAA Regional Rankings snaps a two-game skid and improves to 19-4 overall and 11-3 in conference action. The Blue slip to 8-12 and 4-10.
The lead changed four times in the first four minutes. Wellesley then fought to keep the game within single digits despite a 10-2 run by the hosts, which featured a pair of Lambert trifectas, to close out the frame with the 26-13 advantage.
After a pair of WPI buckets early in the second, it took nearly five minutes for either team to score. Junior Stasha Greenalch (Newington, CT) hit a layup to make it a 32-13 game with 3:22 left in the half. A jumper by junior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) gave the Boynton Hillers the 22-point advantage; however, Wellesley freshman Lauren Dines (Tenafly, NJ) hit a late three for the 19-point margin at the break.
WPI went ahead by 25 behind Lambert's final triple of the day with less than a minute left in the third. The fourth saw Wellesley outscore the Engineers 13-8 with eight off the bench by junior Kayla Jang (South Pasadena, CA).
The Engineers were paced by Biney's game-best 19 points and senior Priscilla Dunphy's (Barrington, RI) game-high seven rebounds. The duo, along with Greenalch all shared game-best honors with four assists and three steals.
Jang led Wellesley with 11 bench points followed by 10 from sophomore Zojajha Ayub (Belle Mead, NJ). Rookie Kendall You Mak (San Francisco, CA) delivered six rebounds and Dines accounted for two of the Blue's three helpers.
The Crimson and Gray bested their guests in points off turnovers (20-11), points in the paint (30-6) and bench points (25-22), as well as all 10 fast break points. Wellesley had advantages in rebounds (31-27) and second chance points 12-7).
WPI gets another shot at first-place Babson Wednesday at 7:30pm in Babson Park. Wellesley hosts MIT at 7pm, also on Wednesday.
