MSMC Holds off Rams for Skyline Win

Farmingdale, N.Y. - With six seconds remaining and Farmingdale State trailing 62-59, the Mount Saint Mary defense forced a missed 3-pointer by the Rams to seal the road victory. The Knights were fouled with 0.3 seconds remaining and hit 1-of-2 at the line for the 63-59 win.

After the Knights (17-5, 13-3) jumped out to an 11-4 lead, FSC (12-10, 10-6) responded with a pair of free-throws by AJ Smith (Freeport, N.Y.) and back-to-back 3's from Kaelyn Ward (East Hampton, N.Y.) to go ahead by one, 12-11.

With 2:22 left in the first, a Tyra Harrison (Baldwin, N.Y.) 3-pointer regained the lead for the Rams at 15-13, before a 7-0 MSMC run spanning midway through the second quarter; put the Knights back in front, 20-15.

Tied 22-22 with 1:35 remaining in the half, Mount Saint Mary recorded the final five points of the quarter and took a 27-22 advantage into the break. Ward (8), Harrison (8) and Smith (6) tallied all 22 points for FSC in the first half, while freshman guard Lyndsay Pace (Cranford, N.J.) scored a team-high 10 points for the Knights.

Trailing 38-31 with 4:24 left to play in the third, the Rams used a 7-2 run which saw five points from Ward to close within two, 40-38. Mount Saint Mary followed by ending the quarter on a 7-2 run to quickly bring the advantage back to seven.

With 4:55 remaining in the game and the Rams down 59-47, Smith connected on a 3 and FSC hit their next six free-throws to pull within three, 59-56.

After two Jessica Rini (Seaford, N.Y.) free-throws put MSMC on top 61-56, Ward cut the deficit to 61-59 with a 3-pointer. The Knights extended the advantage to three with six seconds left to play but Farmingdale State could not hit the game-tying shot.

Ward finished with a game-high 16 points to go along with five assists and seven rebounds, while Smith scored 14 points and had three steals. Harrison tallied 13 points, five rebounds and four assists in the loss.

MSMC was led by sophomore forward Elizabeth Limonta's (Stewart Manor, N.Y.) team-high 13 points.

The Rams next will play host to Purchase in a Skyline Conference game on Tuesday, February 14th at 5:30 p.m.
