Hood Breaks Record In Win Over Regents

More news about: Alverno

ROCKFORD, Illinois -- Gabby Hood broke the single-game school record with 13 assists as Alverno College defeated host Rockford University, 84-68, Tuesday night inside the Seaver Center.

The junior guard flirted with a triple-double as she also scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the stellar performance.

Outside of an initial 2-0 lead on a pair of free throws before the opening tip, the Inferno trailed the entire first half, including 38-35 at intermission. A 30-17 third quarter propelled Alverno in front of the Regents, 65-55, and the visitors led double digits in all but two possessions in the final quarter to snap a two-game skid.

The Inferno shot 50 percent from the field for the second time this season in route to season-highs in points and assists (25).

A balanced offensive attack included five Alverno scorers in double figures led by Mackenzie Mathies' 18. Katelyn Bartlett scored 15, Mollie Mikyska 14 and Donna Zehner 12 joining Hood and Mathies.

Mathies had six assists, while Bartlett and Mikyska snagged seven rebounds apiece and Karli Selear added six to aid the 41-35 advantage on the glass.

Mallorie Getzelman scored 29 for Rockford (7-15, 5-12 NACC) and Taylor May had 24.

Hood's new Alverno assist record was two better than Kristen Speerschneider's 11 which was accomplished on Jan. 7, 2014, and was just an assist off the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference record set by Concordia University Chicago's Courtney Lofink just a month ago.

The Inferno's win coupled with tonight's loss by Milwaukee School of Engineering shrinks the magic number to make the NACC Tournament to one. Alverno (10-12, 10-7) can clinch a playoff spot with a win in any of its final three games and gets its first chance Saturday versus Lakeland University. Tipoff is 7 p.m. in Reiman Gymnasium.
