Marlins Fall 83-55 at EMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Eastern Mennonite University women's basketball team led by 31 after three quarters Wednesday night, downing Virginia Wesleyan 83-55 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

The Royals took advantage of an impressive night at the free-throw line, going 32-42 at the stripe while limiting the Marlins to just 19 attempts for the game.

The game was close early as the Marlins trailed 4-3 just under two minutes into the game. EMU responded with a 9-2 run to take a 13-5 lead with four minutes to go in the first.

The Royals held that lead the rest of the first, carrying a 21-12 edge into the second. EMU shot just 29.4% from the floor in the second, but went 8-8 at the free-throw line to take a 40-24 lead into the locker room.

Eastern Mennonite came out hot after intermission, scoring 32 points in the third quarter on 12-18 (66.7%) shooting. The Royals received 26 of the 32 points from their starting lineup.

Myneshia Walker led Eastern Mennonite (13-6/8-3) with a career-high 30 points. Jonae Guest posted a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds while Chloe Roach finished with 18 points.

NiAsia Caldwell led the Marlins with 14 points and eight rebounds while Jayla Harris finished with 11 points.

Virginia Wesleyan (11-9/6-5) hosts Washington and Lee University (9-10/5-6) Saturday for a 2 p.m. ODAC start.

Notes

The Marlins have lost three in a row, the most for the program since dropping five straight from February 6 to February 16 of last season… This is the first time this year the Marlins have featured the starting lineup of Morris, Washington, Berkley, Harris, and Caldwell… Jonae Guest posted her eighth double-double in the past nine games for EMU… The Marlins are 34-22 all-time against EMU, losing five of the last six… VWC has not won in Harrisonburg since an 82-76, overtime victory in 2011-12.
