Bison slug their way past Leopards in OT, 68-58

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Amy Assad (Millis, Mass.) poured in a career-high 22 points to lift the Nichols College women's basketball team to a 68-58 overtime win over Wentworth Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at Nelson Recreation Center.        
 
Assad also snared 13 rebounds to notch her third double-double of the season as the Bison earned the season sweep of the series. Senior Brittany Donovan (Newport, R.I.) recorded 12 points and eight rebounds for Nichols while sophomore Anna McDaniel (Taunton, Mass.) put up eight points and four rebounds.
 
Freshman Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, Mass.) filled the stat sheet with 18 points, seven rebounds, and four steals for the Leopards. Sophomore Michelle McCloskey (Madison, Conn.) scored 11 points and pulled down six rebounds.
 
Both teams shot 30 percent from the field and combined for 66 turnovers – 36 for Wentworth and 30 for Nichols. The Bison held a 55-50 edge on the glass and went 19-of-31 from the charity stripe (61 percent).
 
Nichols held a three-point lead after one (13-10) as Assad netted five points. The Leopards outscored the Bison 15-14 in the second and went to the locker room down two points at halftime at 27-25. Assad led all scorers with 10 points in the opening 20 minutes while McGibbon paced Wentworth with nine points.
 
The Bison led by four points entering the final period, and a layup by Assad with 3:20 to go in the fourth gave them a five-point lead. A pair of free throws by junior Courtney McCormick (Hanson, Mass.) with 44 seconds to go cut the Leopards deficit to two before a layup from junior Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) tied the game with two seconds left.
 
Nichols used an 8-0 run in overtime to secure the win, led by three points from senior Taylor Daniels (Dudley, Mass.) and baskets from Assad and Donovan.
 
All-Time Series
Today's contest marked the 30th all-time meeting between Wentworth and Nichols College. The Bison have won the last three meetings and lead the series, 16-14.
