BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team took sole possession of sixth place in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) standings Friday evening, as the Cardinals edged The College at Brockport, 58-55, at the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium in conference action.

The Cardinals exacted a measure of revenge, as the Golden Eagles prevailed, 80-78, when the two teams met earlier this season on Dec. 10, 2016 at Memorial Hall. The win did not come easy for Plattsburgh State, however, as the Cardinals saw a 12-point fourth-quarter lead evaporate, and they found themselves in a one-possession game the entire final 24 seconds of the game.

A made layup by Brockport's senior forward Hannah Rehbaum with 24 seconds left completed a 13-3 tear, and the Golden Eagles were forced to foul on the ensuing Cardinal possession. Plattsburgh State went 1-of-2 at the line before Brockport made it a two-point game once again with nine seconds left after a Cardinal foul and a 1-of-2 trip at the line.

Senior guard Moe Jones (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) was fouled immediately on the inbound, and she made the first of two foul shots to hand the Cardinals a 58-55 advantage. Her second shot misfired, however, giving Brockport one last chance at a game-tying shot. Rehbaum missed the mark from distance with three seconds left, and despite the Golden Eagles coming down with an offensive rebound, they were unable to beat the buzzer.

Plattsburgh State rises to 8-7 overall (4-5 SUNYAC) with the win and next visits No. 23 SUNY Geneseo tomorrow at 4 p.m. Brockport slips to 4-12 overall (3-6 SUNYAC) with the loss and next hosts SUNY Potsdam tomorrow at 4 p.m.

After Brockport led from wire-to-wire in the first quarter, sophomore guard Anna Thompson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Spackenkill) drained a 3-pointer on the Cardinals' first possession of the second stanza to take a 14-13 cushion. That kick started a 10-0 Cardinal surge, and sophomore guard Bella DePasquale (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) converted on a layup to hand Plattsburgh State a 21-13 lead. The Golden Eagles used a modest 6-0 run in the latter stages of the first half to make it a three-point game, and after the two teams traded baskets, senior guard Jax Miller (Argyle, N.Y./Argyle) went coast-to-coast following a Brockport missed layup and cashed in on the other end just before the halftime buzzer to hand the Cardinals a 30-25 halftime cushion.

Plattsburgh State continued to press the issue in the third quarter, opening up a 47-34 advantage following a 13-5 spurt. While the Golden Eagles scored the final four points of the third to make it a 47-38 game, the Cardinals opened the gap to 12 midway through the fourth quarter after a Jones layup.

Freshman forward Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) led a balanced Cardinal attack with 12 points in 22 minutes coming off the bench, while Jones scored 11 points.

For Brockport, Rehbaum notched a double-double with a game-high 15 points and 11 rebounds, while senior guard Faith Welch added 12 points. Junior forward Lindsay Johnson pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

Plattsburgh State shot 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the floor and 70 percent (14-of-20) from the line on the game, and the Cardinals forced the Golden Eagles into 20 turnovers. Brockport, meanwhile, shot 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from the field and held a 47-28 edge in rebounds.
