New Paltz Women’s Basketball Upends Oswego, 71-48

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team avenged their previous loss to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe SUNY Oswego as the Hawks defeated the Lakers, 71-48, on Tuesday evening in the Hawk Center.

New Paltz shot 42.6 percent (26-of-61) from the field and converted 10-of-10 from the line while holding a 41-36 advantage in rebounds.

Sophomore guard Lindsay Bettke (Pelham, N.Y./The Urusline School) went 7-of-13 from the field and 4-of-4 from the foul line to score a team-high 19 points while adding a season-high four assists and two blocks for New Paltz.

Senior guard/forward Kit Small (Slingerlands, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) tallied 15 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the field, while distributing a team-high five assists and seven rebounds.

Freshman guard Marion Dietz (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill), freshman guard Sandi Harris (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown) and freshman forward Paige Niemeyer (North Chatham, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) each scored nine points for the Hawks.

Junior guard Courtney Ameele paced the Lakers with 11 points while senior forward Heather Herbert scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds.

Despite a close score in the beginning of the first quarter, New Paltz powered ahead with the advantage (17-11) off a 6-2 run late in the period. The Hawks continued to push forward in the second stanza, extending their lead to 33-17 at intermission off of two free throws by Bettke.

Oswego fought hard in the second half of the game to close the gap but would only cut the deficit to 12 (50-38) with 9:44 left in the final quarter as New Paltz powered ahead for a comfortable 24 point cushion to seal the final 71-48 win.

The Hawks improve to 7-7, 4-4 SUNYAC and head out on the road to play SUNY Fredonia on Friday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
