Second Half Surge Leads Mount Saint Vincent Past FSC

Farmingdale, N.Y. - Mount Saint Vincent trailed 41-26 at the break and outscored Farmingdale State by 16 in the second half as they earned an 83-82 Skyline Conference victory this evening. The FSC women's basketball team fell to 7-7 overall and 6-3 in conference play, while the Dolphins improved to 11-5, 7-2.

After a jumper by junior forward Essence Casey (Huntington Station, N.Y.) put Farmingdale State ahead 48-34 with 5:32 remaining in the third, Mount Saint Vincent went on an 11-0 run to cut the deficit to five.

With 44 seconds left in the quarter, a layup from freshman forward Ahyana Green (Freeport, N.Y.) gave the Rams a seven-point edge, but the Dolphins closed with a pair of Ryan Doherty (New City, N.Y.) free-throws and a Kristen Merrell (Staten Island, N.Y.) layup to pull within three, 54-51.

Tied 66-66 with 4:17 remaining, MSV senior guard Brittany Carroll (Staten Island, N.Y.) connected on back-to-back 3's to give the Dolphins a six-point lead, 72-66. The Rams answered with a 3-pointer on their next trip down the court, before a quick 4-0 Mount Saint Vincent run brought the Dolphins advantage to seven.

An AJ Smith (Freeport, N.Y.) layup and free-throw with 1:06 remaining cut the Farmingdale State deficit to 76-72, but MSV quickly responded with three points to bring the lead back to seven with 39 seconds left to play.

The Rams trailed by four and fell short as Smith hit a 3 at the buzzer. The Dolphins outscored FSC 57-41 in the second half for the 83-82 road victory.

Smith recorded a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Casey tallied 11 points and 16 boards for FSC.

Mount Saint Vincent was led by Doherty's 21 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals. She shot 5-of-12 from the floor and went 11-of-12 at the free-throw line in the victory.

Farmingdale State next will play host to Baruch in a non-conference game on Thursday, January 19th at noon.
