Chicago Rides Strong Defense to 77-61 Win at #23 Rochester

Visiting Chicago scored 31 points off turnovers and 15 second chance points in a 77-61 victory over Rochester at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Friday night.
 
The win boosts Chicago's record to 9-4 overall, 2-0 in the University Athletic Association. The Maroons are tied for first with Case Western Reserve University. Four teams are 1-1: Rochester, Washington-St. Louis, Brandeis, and Carnegie Mellon. Emory and NYU are both 0-2.
 
Rochester is 10-3 overall, 1-1 in the UAA. Al Leslie scored 24 points, collected 13 rebounds, and tied a single-game Rochester record with seven blocked shots. No other Yellowjacket scored in double figures. Sarah Kaminsky had eight points. Lauren Foley and Lauren Deming scored six points each before fouling out.
 
Miranda Burt led Chicago with 18 points, including 9 of 9 at the foul line. Elizabeth Nye scored 14 points, Olariche Obi had 13, Stephanie Anderson scored 12, and Britta Nordstrom scored 10.
 
Nordstrom had four of Chicago's 15 steals. Anderson, Obi, and Nye had three apiece. Rochester committed 23 turnovers to 12 for Chicago.
 
Chicago built a quick lead in the first quarter but Rochester used two free throws by Shea McCartney and a 14-footer from Jillian Silvestri to close within 12-10. UC went on a 13-2 run straddling two periods to take a 25-12 lead. Six players scored in the run. The Maroons led, 38-29, at halftime.
 
Leslie scored four points and Foley hit a 3-pointer to start the third period which got Rochester within 38-36. The Yellowjackets stayed within four points on four different occasions in the period,. Down 50-40, UR went on a 12-4 run to close the third quarter. Leslie scored five points in the burst and Foley hit another trey. Leslie's layup to start the final quarter tied the score at 54-54.
 
Nordstrom made back to back layups as part of a15-2 run that nailed down the victory. Burt had a traditional three-point play. Taylor Lake scored five points and Anderson finished the run by swishing a 3-pointer from left wing.
 
The blocked shot record that Leslie tied was set originally in 1978 by Pat Dowell against Genesee Community College. It was matched twice by Tracey Buettgens – in 1992 versus Skidmore and in 1994 vs. William Smith.
 
Leslie increased her career point total to 1,139 points. She is seventh in career points, 13th in career rebounds (645), and ninth in blocked shots (74).
