MILWAUKEE -- Gabby Hood's three-point play with 8.6 seconds left earned Alverno College a 63-61 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference victory over visiting Rockford University Wednesday night inside Reiman Gymnasium.
The Regents (5-9, 3-6 NACC) had a similar series of events on the previous possession as Taylor May put the visitors up 61-60 on a three-point play of her own with 19 seconds remaining.
After an Inferno (5-9, 5-4) timeout, Hood caught a pass on the right wing, drove to the hoop and scored the go-ahead layup while being fouled. The Racine, Wisconsin, native then made her first free throw of the night for the late two-point lead.
The Alverno defense held in the final seconds and didn't allow a Rockford shot attempt on the last possession to preserve the win.
A tightly-contested contest down the stretch -- which had 17 lead changes and nine ties -- was controlled by the Regents for most of the first half as they built a 12-point lead midway through the second quarter.
The Inferno closed out the half strong with a 10-2 run and cut the deficit to 31-29 at intermission. Each team held a brief four-point lead in the second half, but the game mainly remained a one-possession affair in the final two quarters.
Hood scored a career-high 23 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the field aside from a 1-of-9 performance from the free-throw line. She added 12 rebounds for the double-double and stuffed the stat sheet with a team-high five assists and three steals.
Donna Zehner also registered a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds despite fouling out with 1:23 remaining. Mackenzie Mathies added 12 points and four assists while Karli Selear chipped in eight points and three steals.
The Regents were led by May's game-high 24 points on 10-of-21 shooting, 13 rebounds and seven assists. Tajanae Key led all rebounders with 16 boards.
Alverno returns to action Saturday at Edgewood College for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
