LOS ANGELES – The Occidental College women's basketball team started off 2017 with a 69-53 non-conference win over La Sierra at Rush Gym on Tuesday.
Erin Matsumoto led the way with a well-rounded game, scoring a season-high 22 points and adding seven rebounds and four steals. Triana Anderson pitched in 15 points, going 7 for 9 from the field.
Oxy's defense was stout throughout the game, forcing 18 steals that led to 27 points. Emily Leonardcame off the bench to provide a defensive plug, leading the team with nine rebounds.
"We really pushed the tempo and did a good job producing points off turnovers," Oxy head coach Anahit Aladzhanyan.
The Tigers got off to a fast start with a 10-2 run to begin the game. The Golden Eagles managed to cut into the Tigers league in the second quarter, bringing the score to 22-19 with 5:22 left in the quarter, but the Tigers pulled away to end the quarter 35-23.
Rachel Hahn led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 17 points.
Season Impact: The Tigers improve to 5-6. The Golden Eagles fall to 4-10.
Next Game: The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday, hosting Caltech at 7 p.m. in SCIAC play.
