Cougars Set Single Game Scoring Record In Win Over Rockford

More news about: Concordia-Chicago

January 17, 2017- The weather took a drastic turn to the Arctic side of the thermometer on Wednesday in Illinois. To fix this, the Concordia University Chicago Women's Basketball team turned the thermostat all the way up inside the Seaver Center in route to a record setting 100-84 win over the Rockford Regents. CUC broke their old team record of 99 points that they set inside the same building last year. Five Cougars finished the night in double figures scoring, shot 53 percent from the floor and built important momentum heading into the heart of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference schedule.

The torrid scoring pace began from the opening tip. Courtney Lofink converted the first of the 100 points for the day for CUC on a layup. The Cougars pushed the lead quickly to six with baskets by both Taylor Jacobsen and Erin Jacobsen. Rockford worked to answer in transition, but a deep three by Miranda Rogers kept them chasing midway through the quarter. Crystal Corr got in on the scoring action with three straight free throws. The Regents cut the CUC lead back to two late in the quarter, but a three by T.Jacobsen ended the quarter with the scoreboard showing 23-18 Cougars. Second chance points were important in the quarter with 13 of the 23 points coming on second chances on the offensive end.

The second quarter continued the fast pace. Lauren OrrSarah Smith, and Lisa Lubben connected to extend the CUC lead to nine in the first two minutes. Rockford cut the lead back to three midway through the quarter. A layup by T.Jacobsen and a jumper by Magen Lloyd ended the Rockford run. The two teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the quarter, with a late layup by Mallorie Getzlman cutting the CUC lead to 43-41 at the half.

Both teams enjoyed very friendly rims and hot shooting in the first half. The Cougars shot 48 percent from the field in the half and had 10 different players find the bottom of the net. Rockford found much of the same success, but they were led by Getzelman with 16.

The third quarter was a nearly a two woman show for CUC. Orr and T.Jacobsen combined to score 24 of the 30 points CUC scored in the quarter. Orr began the third with a put-back layup. T.Jacobsen finished a layup of her own on a perfect feed by Lofink. T.Jacobsen then gave the Cougars their first double digit lead of the day with a layup with 6:48 remaining in the quarter. Rockford made another small run before the Cougars' caught fire from deep. T.Jacobsen buried back-to-back triples to extend the lead back to 12. Lofink then converted a free throw before Orr went back-to-back herself from downtown. Not to be outdone, Rogers got in on the party with a deep ball of her own that extended the lead to 17 and forcing a Rockford timeout. Smith scored inside to end the quarter, with CUC in control 73-57.

The Cougars did not take their foot off of the gas with the scoring record in sight. Rockford continued to fight, cutting the CUC lead back to single digits early in the half. Orr stopped the run with a three. The Cougars continued to score at will throughout the quarter. Rogers extended the lead back to 19 with a pair of free throws. The Cougars were able to tie the old scoring record with a layup by Lofink with just over a minute remaining. It would be Lofink just a few moments later, converting the second of a pair of free throws to put CUC at the century mark leading to the 100-84 final.

CUC shot a red hot 53 percent for the game in the record setting performance. Five Cougars finished with double digit scoring, led by T.Jacobsen with 25 and Orr's 17. Lofink quietly had a career day as well. She finished with a triple double (12 points, 14 assists, 12 steals). Lofink broke both her single game assist and steal records on the day.

The Cougars (6-5, 5-3 NACC) will look to carry the momentum into the weekend where a NACC matchup with Marian awaits them on Saturday. Opening tip is scheduled for 2:00p.m from Geiseman.
