WINCHESTER, Va. - The Hood College women's basketball team closed overtime with a 10-4 run as the Blazers scored a 74-71 win at Shenandoah in non-conference action.
Difference Makers
- Ebony Pitt led four Blazers in double figures with a career-high 20 points. The freshman went 9 of 17 from the field.
- Dajah Gee had 13 points and three steals.
- Amanda Hackney and Taylor McGaughey added 11 points apiece. McGaughey tied Allie Appleby for the team-high with eight rebounds.
How it Happened
- A McKenzie Mathis 3-pointer gave the Hornets a 67-64 lead with 3:09 left in the extra period.
- Gee tied the game with 1:58 remaining with a 3-pointer. Two foul shots by Appleby and one by Pitt gave Hood (4-5) a 70-67 edge at 1:09 on the clock.
- Shenandoah (3-6) trailed by just one with 12 seconds left after two free throws by Erin French, but McGaughey iced the win five seconds later with a layup.
- Pitt scored six points during a 14-2 run by the Blazers early in the first quarter, but the Hornets closed the period with seven straight points to cut Hood's lead to 14-13.
- The game remained close in the second quarter and Shenandoah carried a 30-28 edge into the locker room.
- The Blazers took a 34-30 edge early in the third after a three-point play by Pitt, but the Hornets reeled off nine straight points to retake the lead. Hood pulled within a basket, but Erin French scored at the end of the quarter to make it 48-44 in favor of Shenandoah.
- As time wound down in the fourth quarter, Appleby scored to make it 59-58 in favor of Hood with 1:31 to go. A free throw by Hackney extended the lead to 60-58 with six seconds left, but Sarah Donley was fouled and made both free throws to send the game to overtime.
Notes
- French had game-highs with 28 points and 12 boards for the Hornets.
