Balanced Attack Leads WildCats to Big Win over MBU

STAUNTON, VA – The Randolph College women's basketball team got contributions from every player on the team, as the WildCats defeated Mary Baldwin University 86-40 on Saturday.  The nonconference win marks the third-straight for the 'Cats.

In the first period, the Fighting Squirrels controlled the action in the early goings, posting an 8-4 lead with 7:01 remaining.  However, the rest of the 37 minutes in the game would belong to Randolph, including an 18-2 run over the rest of the first.

The posts got things rolling, as Alexis Calloway and Korin Harris started the run.  Calloway (six) and Harris (five) combined for 11, and Maura McMahon came off the bench to score five as well.  MBU hit a basket in the closing seconds, but Daijah Johnson hit a jumper to make it 22-10 after one.

Johnson kept it going in the second, scoring the first four of the period.  After the hosts hit three free throws, Calloway and Taylor Samuels combined for four points to put the difference at 17.  But the Fighting Squirrels used a 9-3 run to cut the deficit to 11 with three minutes in the period.  But Calloway and Harris came through once again in the final minutes to score seven-straight, including an and-one by Calloway, notching the score at 40-22 entering the break.

The 'Cats would be even better in the second half, holding MBU to only 18 points in the final 20 minutes.  Randolph began it with a 19-0 run.  Calloway (four), Johnson (five), Harris (two), Samuels (two), and Kolby Parrott (four) tallied during the run.  The two teams traded points shortly after, but the 'Cats continued to extend advantage.  Harris hit three-straight jumpers to end the period, notching the lead at 74-31.

The sides traded baskets in the fourth, with Jessica Boney and Darian Thornton finishing off the game with two-straight buckets.

Calloway led all scorers with 19 points.  She also registered her second double-double with 10 rebounds.  Harris posted 17 points and nine rebounds, while Johnson added 14.  In addition the team outrebounded Mary Baldwin (1-7 overall) 45-36.

Randolph (5-3) will continue its road trip after finals.  The WildCats travel to St. Petersburg, Florida to take on St. Norbert College (3-3) on December 17 at noon.
