Hood Opens Conference Play with Win

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's basketball team started its Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth slate with a win, defeating Alvernia 74-67.

  • The Blazers used a balanced attack in the win, as five players scored in double figures.
  • Freshman Ebony Pitt had her best game of her career, scoring 13 points to go along with five rebounds, eight assists and four steals. All five of her rebounds came off the offensive glass.
  • Allie Appleby matched her for team-high honors with 13 points on 5 of 8 shooting. Amanda Hackney added 11 points. Dajah Gee had 10 points and led the team with nine rebounds. Denisha Robinson led the reserves with 10 points.

How it Happened

  • Hood (3-2, 1-0) led 34-32 at the half but opened the third quarter with a 13-2 run. A bucket by Gee capped the run and made it 45-34 with 7:15 on the clock.
  • After Alvernia (0-5, 0-1) pulled within 57-55 with 6:02 left in the game, Jasmine Webster hit a 3-point field goal and the Crusaders never got within three the rest of the way.
  • Alvernia led 24-20 after the first quarter, but Hood turned up the defense in the second. The Blazers allowed just eight points in the period to take a 34-32 lead into the break. The Crusaders led 27-22 with 7:33 left in the half, but Hood scored the next six points as an Appleby layup gave the Blazers a 28-27 edge three minutes later.

Notes

  • Despite 12 rebounds from Torie Zerbe and 10 from Miranda Hoover, Hood outrebounded Alvernia 43-41. The Blazers outscored the Crusaders in the paint 48-30.
  • Hood shot 41 percent in the contest and limited Alvernia to 37 percent. The Blazers hit a robust 11 of 14 at the free throw line (79 percent).
  • Marissa Armolt came of the bench for Alvernia to score a game-high 23 points. Copper added 13 and Kiersten Ingram netted 11.
  • It was the first time the Blazers won their conference opener since 2012-13, when they defeated Stevenson 67-53.
