Ithaca Women Pull Away in Third Quarter to Defeat Cortland, 71-51

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Ithaca outscored Cortland in the third quarter, 24-8, to erase a seven-point halftime deficit and the Bombers remained unbeaten with a 71-51 win over host Cortland in non-league women's basketball action.

Erin Ferguson led Ithaca (4-0) with 20 points, nine rebounds and four steals. She made 9-of-13 shots from the field. Ali Ricchiuti and Jordan Beers added 12 points apiece for the Bombers.

Cortland (1-2) was led by Kristy Vitucci's (Deer Park) 14 points. She hit four of her six 3-point attempts. Alyssa Crosby (Brier Hill/Hammond) finished with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting along with five rebounds. Cassidy Chapko (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley) and Stephanie Rice (Duanesburg) each ended with six points and six rebounds, with Chapko also dishing out four assists, and Danielle Levine (Holbrook/Sachem North) made all three of her field goal attempts and finished with six points.

Cortland fell behind 13-4 in the game's first three and a half minutes, but rallied and led 20-17 at the end of the first quarter. The Red Dragons closed the second quarter with five straight points to lead 36-29 at the half, and took their largest lead at 38-29 on a Levine layup 20 seconds into the third quarter.

Ithaca, however, scored 13 straight points - eight by Beers and five by Ferguson - to take a 42-38 lead with 6:48 left in the third. Vitucci's 3-pointer brought the Red Dragons within one, but the Bombers rattled off an 11-0 run to go up by 12 with 1:35 left.

Vitucci hit another 3-pointer in the final 30 seconds of the quarter and Cortland trailed 53-44 entering the fourth quarter. Ithaca scored the first two baskets of the last stanza and led by double figures the rest of the way.

Cortland committed 27 turnovers, 18 in the second half, while Ithaca's 15 turnovers included only five after halftime. Cortland shot 42 percent from the field and 29 percent (5-of-17) from 3-point range, while Ithaca had similar numbers at 43 percent overall and 31 percent (8-of-26) from the arc.

Cortland will travel to Elmira on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. non-league game.
