Cougar Women's Defense Drowns Out Beavers

More news about: Concordia-Chicago

Nov. 22, 2016 - The Concordia Cougars are now 2-0 on the season behind a great defensive effort that caused the visiting Blackburn Beavers all sorts of problems on offense. CUC never trailed in the game and, led by a monster effort from Courtney Lofink, Concordia-Chicago sailed to an easy 83-48 win over Blackburn College.

The Cougars jumped out to an early 10-0 lead and wouldn't look back from there. The CUC defense was lethal, forcing 36 turnovers in the game, which led to easy buckets in transition on the other end of the court. The 10-0 run to start the game set up the rest of the quarter with Lauren Orr and Taylor Jacobsen leading the runout to a 22-9 lead after one. The second quarter proved to be tougher for the Cougars as they defense slipped a bit, but the Cougars still shot 53% from the field in the second to lead at halftime 43-25.

The second half proved that the Cougars would not let this game slip away, and they kept the pedal to the metal on the Beavers.  Despite some poor shooting in the third quarter, CUC still was able to win the quarter with their defense that forced more transition buckets. T. Jacobsen and Lofink led the way for the Cougars in the second half as they were the driving force to the offense.  Freshman Crystal Corr also provided key contributions down the stretch as she put up seven points, four rebounds, one assist and one block in nine minutes of play. In her first two collegiate games, Corr has become a key part of the bench mob that has produced an impressive 51 points.

Junior point guard Courtney Lofink finished the game with 14 points, four assists, three rebounds and 12 steals on the night. The steals allowed Lofink to break her single-game record of 11 which she achieved in last year's game against Blackburn. T. Jacobsen had a solid game, leading CUC with 20 points (8-16), 10 rebounds and three assists for the game. Orr chipped in 18 points (7-17) and five rebounds to continue as the Cougars' leading scorer.

The Cougars (2-0, 1-0 NACC) travel to Milwaukee this Saturday for a conference matchup against Alverno College.  Opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m..
