Trewyn’s Career Game Leads Warhawk Women to Sixth Straight Win

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team posted its 18th straight regular season non-conference victory Sunday with a 79-50 triumph over Simpson (Iowa) on the second and final day of the Holiday Inn Express Classic at UW-La Crosse.

 

The Warhawks (6-0 overall) held the storm to 36.5 percent shooting and forced 27 turnovers, scoring 28 points off the miscues.

 

For the second straight game, junior guard Brooke Trewyn achieved a career high in scoring, totaling 28 points on 12-of-20 shooting, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, and added a game-high nine rebounds and three steals.

 

Freshman center Kaelynn Lesniak and freshman guard Becky Raeder contributed nine points apiece, and junior guard Malia Smith posted eight points, five rebounds and team bests of four assists and five steals.

 

Following the conclusion of play, Trewyn and Smith were selected to the All-Tournament Team.

 

The Storm (1-3) held its only lead after scoring the first basket of the game. UW-Whitewater ran off eight straight points, including five from Trewyn and three from Lesniak, during a one-minute, six-second stretch in the first quarter to take a double-digit lead with 2:07 on the clock.

 

The Warhawks extended their lead to 18 early in the second quarter on two more baskets by Trewyn and held a 38-23 advantage by the end of the half.

 

Trewyn opened the second half with a 3-pointer as UW-Whitewater extended its lead to 26 points by the midway point of the third quarter. Junior guard Niki Lazar hit a 3-pointer in the waning moments of the frame to give the Warhawks a 60-33 lead.

 

UW-Whitewater led by as many as 32 points in the fourth quarter en route to its second win over Simpson of the season.

 

The Warhawks resume non-conference play on Saturday, Dec. 10, against Coe (Iowa) on Parents' Day at Kachel Gymnasium. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.
