SCRANTON, Pa. - The third-ranked University of Scranton women's basketball team used a historic effort from outside the arc on Saturday night to blow out visiting King's, as the Lady Royals nailed a school record 15 three-pointers in a convincing 89-52 win over King's as part of the 2016 Cross County Challenge inside the John Long Center.

With the win, Scranton moved to a perfect 4-0 on the year, while King's fell to 1-3 overall with the defeat.

In the first period, both teams came out hot shooting the basketball, as Scranton held a slim 16-14 lead late in the quarter. But, Scranton scored six points in a row late, which was followed up by a King's basket with 33 seconds left that made the score 22-16 after the first 10 minutes.

But, in the second quarter, Scranton began to knock down shots from the outside and clamp down on defense, as a 27-8 romp in the period gave the Lady Royals a 49-24 lead heading into the locker room for halftime. In the second quarter alone, Scranton nailed five three's to make up 15 of the 27 points scored in the period.

The scoring barrage continued in the third quarter, as a 32-13 run by the Lady Royals put the game completely away entering the fourth, as Scranton led 81-37 after 30 minutes of play. From there, it was academic for Scranton, as they won their third game of the year by at least 30 points.

Overall, freshman guard Emily Sheehan (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) led all scorers in the win with 22 points, going 6-of-10 from three-point range. With six made three's in a game, Sheehan put herself into the Scranton record books, putting her in a tie for sixth all-time in most three-pointers made in a game in school history.

Elsewhere, junior Katie O'Reilly (Montville, N.J./Montville) was just as strong from long range, nailing five three's in a career-high 17-point effort.

Overall, Scranton not only set a school-record for three-pointers made with 15, but also three-pointers attempted in a contest with 36. On defense, it was another strong night for the team, as they held King's to just 30.2 percent shooting from the floor in the win.

The 2016 Cross-County Challenge wraps up Sunday evening inside the John Long Center, as the University of Scranton women's basketball team takes on Wilkes at 7 p.m. The first game of the night features Marywood and King's, and that will start at 5 p.m.
