UW-Whitewater Women Extend Win Streak to Five Games

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team remained undefeated for the season and increased its regular season non-conference win streak to 17 games on Saturday with a 70-54 victory over Ripon College in a non-conference contest at the UW-La Crosse Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic Tournament.
 
The Warhawks (5-0) jumped out to a 12-point advantage after the first quarter, before Ripon went on a 12-4 run to cut into the lead heading into the second quarter.
 
UW-Whitewater limited Ripon (2-1) to 34.0 percent shooting for the contest and made 42.6 percent on the offensive end, including 38.5 percent from behind the three-point arc.
 
Junior guard Brooke Trewyn (Whitewater/Whitewater) tallied a career-high 26 points to go along with a team-best 12 rebounds to lead the Warhawks. Junior guard Malia Smith (Bolingbrook, Ill./Neuqua Valley)collected 15 points, five rebounds, and three steals, and junior forward Andrea Meinert (West Bend/Kettle Moraine Lutheran) finished with seven points and four rebounds.
 
The Redhawks cut into the UW-Whitewater lead in the second quarter outscoring the Warhawks 14-7 in the frame to trail by five going into halftime.
 
UW-Whitewater came out of halftime extending their lead to seventeen points on a Trewyn jumper before Ripon closed the gap to twelve heading into the fourth.
 
In the fourth, Smith capped a 10-1 run by herself with two 3-pointers and two lay-ups to make it 65-50 just over half way through the period. Four straight free-throws made by Meinert and Trewyn extended the Warhawk lead to a game-high 19 points with just over two minutes left in the game.
 
The two teams traded free-throws in the final two minutes and UW-Whitewater sealed the victory with a couple of defensive stops.
 
The Warhawks resume non-conference play tomorrow afternoon against Simpson College at 3 p.m. to conclude the UW-La Crosse Tournament. UW-Whitewater defeated the Storm 71-55 a week ago, at the UW-Eau Claire Tipoff Tournament.
