Providence, R.I.--The Rhode Island College women's basketball squad fell to Bridgewater State, 43-37, in a non-conference contest played at The Murray Center on Tuesday evening.

Rhode Island College (2-2) was led by senior guard Alex Moore (West Newbury, MA) who totaled a game-high 19 points and four rebounds, while freshman guard Jordyn Gauvin (Fall River, MA) narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine boards in the setback for the Anchorwomen.

Bridgewater State (2-1) junior forward Rhiana Page (Brookline, MA) tallied 16 points, five rebounds and four steals, while senior guard Chelsea Saucier (Portland, ME) added eight points, a team-best six rebounds and three steals for the Bears.

RIC jumped out to the early lead and held a 6-0 advantage on a layup by freshman center Jessica Brielmaier (West Greenwich, RI). The Anchorwomen held Bridgewater scoreless in the first quarter until a layup by Page cut the lead to four, 6-2, after the first quarter of play. RIC shot just 20 percent from the field (3-for-15), but held the visiting Bears to just 6.7 percent (1-for-15) in the first quarter.

Bridgewater began to chip away at the advantage and took its first lead of the game when a layup by sophomore guard Sara DaSilva (Chelmsford, MA) made the score 9-8 with 4:05 left in the first half. The two teams then traded leads with the Anchorwomen holding on to the 15-14 advantage on a layup by freshman forward Victoria Demers (Sutton, MA) with 1:55 remaining on the clock for the stanza. BSU outscored RIC down the stretch and took a two-point, 19-17, lead heading into the locker room at halftime. RIC forced Bridgewater State into 13 first half turnovers.

Bridgewater extended its lead to five points early in the third quarter when a layup by Paige gave the Bears a 26-21 lead with 5:22 left in the frame. Bridgewater eventually would build a 30-25 lead after three quarters of action. 

Rhode Island College responded early in the fourth quarter and tied the game 35-35 on a three pointer by Gauvin with 5:05 left in the contest. Bridgewater State pulled away down the stretch, going on a 6-0 run to take the six-point, 43-37, non-conference win.

Rhode Island College shot 28 percent (14-for-50) from the field, 11.8 percent (2-for-17) from three-point land and 70 percent (7-for-10) from the charity stripe. The Bears shot 32 percent (17-for-52) from the field, 15 percent (3-for-20) from downtown and 66.7 percent (6-for-9) from the free throw line.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Roger Williams on Sunday, Nov. 27 (2 p.m.).
