No. 5 Lady Royals Dominate Cabrini From the Start in Convincing 83-23 Victory in Home Opener

SCRANTON, Pa. - Freshman guard Mackenzie Yori (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton Area) scored a game-high 19 points in the first game of her career inside the John Long Center, as the fifth-ranked University of Scranton women's basketball team left no doubt in a dominating 83-23 victory over Cabrini on Tuesday evening.

The win was an historic one for the Lady Royals (who are now 3-0 on the year), as the 60-point margin of victory was the largest in a game for Scranton since a 95-21 win over Immaculata on December 10, 2004. It also marked the first time since a 63-23 win over Wilkes on Jan. 17, 2006 that the Lady Royals gave up exactly 23 points in a game.

In the victory, Scranton put away Cabrini (now 1-3 on the year) early, as they raced out to a 23-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

The Lady Royals were once again dominant on the defensive end in the victory, as the visiting Cavaliers didn't make their first basket until their was 18 seconds left in the opening period.

For the game, Cabrini shot just 14.3 percent from the floor and made just one three-pointer (went 1-for-18 from outside the arc). The Lady Royals also held the Cavaliers to single digits in each of the four quarters of the contest, as well.

Overall, Yori impressed in her first game in a Lady Royal uniform in the Long Center, scoring 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor. Yori also nailed four three-pointers in the win, missing just one from outside the arc in the victory.

Elsewhere, Scranton had just one other player hit double-figures on the night in sophomore guard Bridgette Mann(Canadensis, Pa./Wallenpaupack), who ended with 16 points, while dishing out seven assists.

Senior forward Denise Rizzo (Paramus, N.J./Holy Angels) came off the bench to score nine points, while fellow senior forward Sarah Payonk (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring Ford) ended the night with eight points and six assists.

Overall, 14 of the 16 players who got in the game for Scranton scored, as the Lady Royals ended the night shooting 55.7 percent from the floor.

The University of Scranton women's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday, as they host the Cross-County Challenge inside the John Long Center. Scranton will take on King's in the first game of the Challenge beginning at 5 p.m., which will be followed by a contest between Marywood and Wilkes at 7 p.m.
