Moore and Rubera Lead RIC in, 62-52, Win Over Leopards

Waltham, Mass.--Senior guard Alex Moore (West Newbury, MA) scored a game-high 24 points and added 10 rebounds for a double-double to lead the Rhode Island College women's basketball team to a 62-52 victory against Wentworth in the consolation game of the 2016 Brandeis Invitational played at Auerbach Arena on Saturday afternoon.

 

Junior guard Jessa Rubera (Newton, MA) added 18 points and three assists for RIC (2-1), while freshman guard Fatima McDonald (Attleboro, MA) contributed eight points and six boards.

 

Leading the way for Wentworth (0-3) was sophomore Baylor Johnson (Greer, SC) with 16 points and three rebounds, while junior forward Haley Sabino (Topsfield, MA) added nine points and a game-high 13 boards.

 

Wentworth controlled the action early on and the largest lead of the quarter for the Leopards came with just :21 left when a three-pointer by freshman guard Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, MA) made the score 19-7. Wentworth held the 19-9 advantage after the first quarter of play.

 

RIC responded in the second quarter and used a 19-8 run of its own, capped by a three-pointer by Moore to grab the 28-27 lead with 1:17 left in the first half. The Anchorwomen took the two-point, 29-27, advantage heading into the locker room at halftime.

 

RIC dominated play in the third quarter, outscoring Wentworth by a 19-10 margin, to take the 48-37 lead after three quarters of play.

 

The Anchorwomen extended their lead in the fourth quarter as a layup by freshman guard Jordyn Gauvin (Fall River, MA) gave the team their largest lead of the afternoon, 54-37, with 7:14 left in the contest. The Leopards cut the lead down to single digits late in regulation, but it wasn't enough as RIC held on for the 10-point victory.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Bridgewater State on Tuesday, Nov. 22 (5:0 p.m.).
