Three in double figures pace UNE to 62-46 win at Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine -- Alicia BrownAshley Coneys, and Olivia Shaw combined for 39 points to lead the University of New England in a 62-46 women's basketball victory over the University of Southern Maine in the mutual season-opener on Tuesday evening (Nov. 15) at Fifield Court.

Brown topped the scoring effort for the Nor'easters (1-0) with 14 points, while Coneys contributed 13 points and a game-best eight rebounds. Shaw made 6-of-9 from the field to tally 12 points. Sam MacDonald went for nine points, six boards, and five assists. Kristie McNall tossed in eight points off the bench.

The Huskies (0-1) were guided by a contest-high 17 points from Emily Nicholson. Kayla Stacy added 10.

After Stacy pulled USM to within two (11-9) early in the 2nd quarter, Coneys quickly answered with a jumper for UNE and McNall soon followed with a trey to bump the cushion to 16-9. The margin was no less than six the rest of the way.

Big Blue closed the initial half with a 14-2 run to gain a 25-11 cushion -- limiting the home side to just four points in the 2nd quarter.

USM received a jumper from Kimberly Howrigan to end the 3rd period (37-28), and Nicholson nailed a three-pointer to open the 4th and cut the gap to 37-31. However, Brown and Shaw brought the Nor'easters home with 19 of their points (11 and 8, respectively) down the stretch.

Big Blue out-scored the Huskies in the paint, 30-12, and registered 16 second-chance points in the match.

UNE returns to Biddeford for its own Ramada Roundball Invitational at the end of the week. The hosts begin the two-day event with the University of Maine-Farmington on Friday (5:30 p.m.), prior to Johnson & Wales University and Regis College taking the floor.
