Leslie's 33 Pts. and FT Record Lead UR on Opening Night

PALESTRA – Al Leslie scored a career high 33 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and blocked four shots to lead the University of Rochester to a 74-59 women's basketball victory over scrappy William Smith College on Tuesday evening.

Lauren Deming scored 13 points, grabbed nine boards, and had four assists for Rochester (1-0). Lauren Foley scored 10 points, including a pair of three-point goals. Rochester is ranked in the top 10 in Division III in three pre-season polls.

Alyssa DiCampli led William Smith with 13 points. Melanie Patterson scored 12 points, had five assists, and four steals. Olivia Hughes scored seven points. William Smith scored 17 points off 20 Rochester turnovers. The Herons (0-1) made 14 steals with eight players getting at least one theft. 

Leslie hit 9 of 12 from the field and 15 of 18 from the foul line. The 15 free throws made tied the Rochester single-game record set in 2011 by Melissa Alwardt.

William Smith hung tough. Rochester opened an eight-point lead twice in the third quarter, the last time at 51-43 after Leslie's layup.  Sarah Brophy made a conventional three-point play and Patterson sank three of four from the line in the span of 45 seconds to trim the deficit to 51-49 in the last minute. Leslie made three free throws in the closing seconds to put UR ahead, 54-49, heading into the fourth quarter.
Natalia Baum scored on a fast break layup and Olivia Hughes scored five points – a three-pointer and two free throws – in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 56-56.

Foley hit the crucial shot, a three-pointer with just under seven minutes to go. It triggered a 15-0 Rochester run which pushed UR ahead, 71-56, with 91 seconds left. Leslie scored the other 12 points – three layups and six of six from the foul line.
