No. 22 Pointers Outlast Inferno In Opener

MILWAUKEE -- Host Alverno College hung tough with 22nd-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for three quarters, but the Pointers pulled away in the fourth for a 64-42 final in the season opener for both teams.

In the first half of the game, the Inferno (0-1) stayed with UW-Stevens Point (1-0), not allowing the visitors to lead by more than seven. Alverno pulled within four with 22 seconds remaining on a Katelyn Bartlett basket, but the Pointers answered just before the horn for the six-point halftime lead.

UWSP increased the lead to eight after the third and then outscored the Inferno 22-8 in the fourth for the largest margin of the contest.

Bartlett led Alverno with 12 points as she made 6-of-7 from the free-throw line while K.D. Jones scored seven on 3-of-5 shooting from the field and Mackenzie Mathies sunk a pair of 3s for six points.

The Inferno shot 11-of-15 from the line and made 5-of-16 3-pointers.

Donna Zehner hauled in a team-best seven rebounds while Gabby Hood added three assists.

The Pointers' Lauren Anklam led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting as the visitors shot over 50 percent from the field.

Next up for Alverno is the Inferno Classic this Friday and Saturday when it plays host to Ripon College and No. 14 UW-Oshkosh.
