Cortland Women Lock Up SUNYAC Playoff Berth With Win at Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y. - Freshman Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) recorded career bests of 16 points and eight rebounds and junior Alyssa Crosby (Brier Hill/Hammond) scored 13 points and added team highs of nine rebounds and three steals as Cortland sealed a SUNYAC playoff berth with a 64-38 victory at Potsdam.

Cortland is now 15-8 overall and in fifth place in the conference at 10-6, a game and a half ahead of sixth-place Brockport (8-7). The Red Dragons are three games up on seventh-place Plattsburgh (6-9) and are assured of no worse than sixth place in the final regular-season standings. The top six teams make the conference playoffs. Cortland has two games remaining - home tilts with Brockport Tuesday and Oswego Friday, both at 5:30 p.m.

Cortland led 14-11 after one quarter and 30-22 at halftime, but put the game away with a 25-5 advantage in the third quarter. The Red Dragons shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half and finished at 43 percent, including 35 percent (10-of-29) from the 3-point arc.

Vitucci hit 5-of-8 from long distance in 21 minutes off the bench. Crosby was 3-for-4 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the foul line. Danielle Levine (Holbrook/Sachem North) and Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) added eight points apiece, with Levine also securing seven rebounds. Cassidy Chapko (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley) led the Red Dragons with five assists.

Katie Lavoie led Potsdam (1-21, 0-15 SUNYAC) with 21 points and three steals. She hit five 3-pointers in 12 tries. Janay Smith scored six points and Abbey Smith led the Bears with six rebounds. Meghan Driscoll dished out four assists and recorded two steals. The Bears were held to 25 percent shooting from the floor overall and 22 percent (5-of-24) from the 3-point line.
