Big Three Power Chargers Past Bryn Athyn

There's domination and then there's what seniors Aubrey FolgerShanice Smith and Katy Stover accomplished on Wednesday night as the big three combined for 73 points in Lancaster Bible's 77-44 thrashing of Bryn Athyn in Bryn Athyn, Pa. The victory, Lancaster Bible's 10th straight, improves the Chargers to 17-3 overall and 14-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference. Bryn Athyn falls to 13-8 overall and 11-5 in conference play.

It's been a record-breaking two weeks for the Chargers and it continued Wednesday as Folger scored her 2,000th point in the victory and Smith pulled down a program-record 28 rebounds.

How it Happened: Bryn Athyn jumped out to an early 10-4 lead over the first 2:30 as the Chargers turned the ball over twice which led to six Bryn Athyn points. The Chargers did not panic and used a 16-0 scoring run over the next 5:44 to grab a 20-10 lead. Aubrey Folger and Shanice Smith each had six points during the run, which Smith capped with a three-point play.

After taking a 24-15 lead into the second quarter, Lancaster Bible opened up a 12-point advantage, 34-22, on a jumper from Folger with 4:25 to play in the quarter and eventually grabbed a 37-26 lead at halftime asKaty Stover knocked down a 3-pointer with one second to play.

The third quarter was all Chargers, all the time as Lancaster Bible outscored Bryn Athyn, 27-4 over 10 minutes. Folger, Smith and Stover combined for 25 of the 27 points as the Chargers had their most lopsided quarter of the season. With 6:22 to play in the quarter, Folger scored her 19th point of the game and became the first player in Lancaster Bible history to surpass 2,000 points for a career. 

The teams traded baskets for much of the fourth quarter as Lancaster Bible took its biggest lead of the game, 66-32, on a jumper from Stover with 7:39 to play.

By the Numbers: Folger finished with a career-high 33 points on 14-of-20 shooting and grabbed five rebounds...Folger has 138 points (27.6 ppg) over her last five games...Smith finished with 14 points and set a new program record with 28 rebounds, 20 of which came on the defensive glass...Stover had a season-high 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including a 4-of-9 effort from beyond the arc...Junior Krissy Pennell had nine assists and Marisa Jo Abts added two points and five rebounds...Lancaster Bible shot 31-of-61 (50.8 percent) from the floor...The Chargers held a 50-38 rebounding advantage...Kristina Clark led the Lions with 14 points.

The Coach Says: "I thought we played very well tonight," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Katelyn Vanderhoffsaid. "Our 2-3 zone was very effective and it really disrupted what they wanted to do offensively."

On Smith's performance..."Shy was huge for us tonight," Vanderhoff said. "Bryn Athyn is a very good offensive rebounding team and Shy completely took that away."

Things to work on..."We need to keep working to get better at not turning the ball over so much," Vanderhoff said. "That will be our focus going into Friday's game."

On Folger's performance..."Aubrey had a very quiet 33 points," Vanderhoff said. "She has a great ability to read the floor and we have the players who can find her when she is open."

Extra! Extra!: Lancaster Bible is now 4-0 all-time against Bryn Athyn...Folger leads the NEAC with 23.5 points per game and her 60.2 shooting percentage is also tops in the conference...Clark came into the game averaging over 22 points per game and was held to 14 by the Chargers...This is the fourth straight season the Chargers have had a 10-game winning streak...The Chargers are 14-1 in their last 15 games...Lancaster Bible defeated Bryn Athyn, 74-66 on Dec. 5 in Lancaster...Pennell's 8.7 assists per game are the second-most in NCAA Division III...Lancaster Bible can clinch both the NEAC South Division and the top spot in the NEAC with a win on Friday night against SUNY Polytechnic.
