Mazzarelli Leads Albright to Victory over Arcadia

READING, Pa. – Sophomore Nina Mazzarelli led four players in double figures with 21 points as No. 15 Albright rolled to an 86-56 MAC Commonwealth victory over Arcadia on Wednesday in the Bollman Center.

Mazzarelli finished with her second-highest scoring output of the season to lead the Lions to their seventh-straight victory.

Senior Kelecia Harris had 14 points, while Emily O'Donnell and Shannon Thomas each finished with 11 points.

Sophomore Alysha Lofton led the Lions with 11 rebounds, while Thomas finished with a game-high seven assists.

Albright, which improved to 19-2 overall and 11-1 in MAC Commonwealth play, continued its season long trend of dominating the opposition in the third quarter.

The Lions held a 38-32 lead at halftime, but outscored the Knights 30-13 in the third quarter to pull away for the win.

Albright opened the third quarter with a 15-0 run to blow the game open.

Harris hit a jumper to ignite the run and Lofton made two free throws and Mazzarelli made another free throw giving Albright a 43-32 lead with 8:28 to play in the third quarter.

Mazzarelli and Thomas then connected on back-to-back three-pointers to increase the lead to 49-32 at the 7:09 mark of the third.

The Lions capped the run with back-to-back layups by Mazzarelli and O'Donnell to extend the lead to 53-32 with 6:33 remaining in the third quarter.

Albright extended the lead to 27 points when Xio Toledo connected on a three-pointer with 1:13 left in the quarter.

Mazzarelli hit 1-of-2 free throw attempts giving the Lions a 68-45 lead after three quarters of play.

The final margin of victory marked the Lions biggest lead of the game and came on a three-point play by Amara-Niani Jackson with six seconds left in the contest.

Albright shot 44.9 percent from the floor for the game, which included shooting 50.0 percent in the second half, and held Arcadia to just 30.2 percent shooting for the game.

The Lions also took advantage of Arcadia turnovers as Albright turned 20 Knight turnovers into 24 points.

Arcadia dropped to 8-12 overall and 3-8 in conference play with the loss. The Knights were led by senior Addy Crenny who scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Susan Bossler added 11 points for the Knights.

Albright returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 6) when it looks to avenge its only conference loss of the season when Messiah comes to the Bolllman Center for a 2 p.m. MAC Commonwealth contest.
