Cortland Women Finish Strong to Defeat SUNYAC Leader Oneonta, 67-55

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland went on a 10-0 lead to break open a tie game in the final five minutes and the Red Dragons defeated SUNYAC leader Oneonta, 67-55. Cortland and Oneonta are tied for second in the SUNYAC with 7-2 records, a half game behind Geneseo (8-2).

Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) led Cortland (12-4 overall) with 15 points and nine rebounds and also handed out three assists. Stephanie Rice (Duanesburg) scored 12 points, 10 in the fourth quarter, and Cassidy Chapko (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley) finished with 11 points and four rebounds. Jennifer Deuel (Whitesboro) chipped in with nine points, eight rebounds and a team-high four steals, and Taylor Miller (Freeport) led the squad with four assists.

Lyteshia Price paced Oneonta (11-5 overall) with 27 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks. She made 9-of-18 shots from the floor, 5-of-11 from 3-point range. Cara Adams connected on four 3-pointers and ended with 12 points, while Madeline Frank grabbed nine boards and Samantha Lisikatos dished out five assists.

Oneonta led 15-13 after one quarter and extended its lead to 24-13 on a Price trey with 4:44 left before halftime. Cortland answered with 3-pointers on each of its next four possessions - two by Cohen sandwiched around one each by Alaina Lynch (Staten Island/Staten Island Tech) and Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) - to take a 25-24 lead with 2:09 left. Oneonta, however, finished the half on a 6-0 run and led 30-25 at intermission.

The guests took eight-point leads twice in the third quarter, the last at 40-32 with 4:48 left on an Adams 3-pointer. Cortland got back within three at the break and took a 44-43 lead after baskets by Rice and Chapko in the first minute of the fourth. The game remained close the next five minutes, with Oneonta tying the score at 50-50 on a Price jumper with 4:46 on the clock.

Cortland started its decisive run with a Rice free throw, and Deuel made a driving layup with 3:56 left to put Cortland up 53-50. Rice buried a 3-pointer less than 20 seconds later, and her two foul shots at the 1:44 mark put the hosts up 58-50. Cohen sank two foul shots with 1:21 left to make it a 10-point game, and the Red Dragons led by at least eight from that point. Cortland finished the game 21-of-25 from the foul line (84 percent), including 14-of-16 in the fourth quarter.

Both teams struggled with their shooting touches from the field. Oneonta finished at 30 percent overall and 35 percent (10-of-29) from the arc, while Cortland was 32 percent overall and 35 percent (8-of-23) from long distance. Oneonta, however, committed 20 turnovers to Cortland's 11.

Cortland will host New Paltz Saturday at 2 p.m.
