No 10 Washington Rides Big Third Quarter to Beat No. 7 UR

ST. LOUIS – Washington University rode a 24-1 third quarter run to a dominating lead and went on to a 59-38 victory over the University of Rochester in a women's basketball matchup of nationally-ranked teams on Friday night.

The result now puts three teams in a tie for first place in the University Athletic Association heading into Sunday's games. Rochester, Washington, and New York University all stand at 5-1 in the UAA. Rochester goes to Chicago, Emory visits Washington, and NYU hosts Case Western Reserve.

Rochester entered the game ranked No., 7 in the D3hoops.com poll and No. 8 in the WBCA poll. Washington is ranked No. 10 in both polls. The Yellowjackets are 15-2 overall and had a 10-game winning streak snapped. Washington is 14-3 overall.

Amanda Martinez scored 12 of her game-high 17 points in the third quarter run. Jordan Thompson had six of her nine points. Lily Sarros scored 15 points for the Bears and grabbed 10 rebounds. Martinez had eight boards. Thompson added five assists.

Rochester did not have a double-figure scorer. Lauren Deming finished with eight points. Brynn Lauer had five points and three assists. Al Leslie, Sarah Kaminsky, and Kayla Kibling each scored four points. Leslie led Rochester on the boards with eight. Cassandra McCambridge grabbed seven rebounds.

The Yellowjackets made only three of 11 floor shots and turned the ball over eight times. Washington was 13-19 from the field and gave the ball away just twice in the 10 minutes.

Two of the UR baskets came in the first two minutes. With Washington within a point (24-23), Deming and Kaminsky both made layups for a five-point edge. Washington ran off 12 straight points before Tylar Guerrieri made the second of two free throws. The Bears answered with 12 more points. Guerrieri ended the quarter by sinking a jumper from the key.

In the first half, Washington leaped to an 11-0 lead after Rochester missed its first three shots and turned the ball over six times. The Yellowjackets climbed back into it, getting three, 14-11, after one.

Washington lost track of its offense in the second quarter when the Bears scored only seven points. Rochester was able to move in front late in the quarter and took a 24-21 lead heading into the locker room. The Yellowjackets were 9-25 from the floor at intermission. Washington was 8-35. 

Next Friday, they do it all over again when Washington comes to the Palestra.
