BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Six players scored in double figures and the Captains posted the 12th-highest scoring performance in program history in a 109-71 drubbing of the Southern Virginia Knights (3-13, 2-8) on the road Wednesday night. Christopher Newport won their tenth straight game, improving to 15-2 overall with an 8-2 mark in conference play.

For the second time in as many games against the Knights this season, CNU reached triple digits, marking the 29th time in women's basketball history the Captains hit the 100-point barrier. It was also the third time in the last two years the Captains eclipsed the mark against Southern Virginia, after scoring 117 and 106 against the Knights in the Freeman Center the last two opportunities.

The potent offensive outburst started from the opening tip, as CNU led wire-to-wire thanks to a 27-8 first quarter. The bench provided a spark in the first quarter, as Makeda Wright knocked down 2-of-3 shots, including a three-pointer, to finish the first ten minutes with five points. Also off the bench, Jasmine Bonivel buried a pair of three-pointers in the waning moments of the first stanza, leading all scorers with six points.

With a big lead in hand, the Captains defensive pressure let up a bit in the second quarter as Southern Virginia tried to claw back into the game. Offensively, though, CNU never slowed and added to the lead before half time, carrying a 59-33 advantage into the intermission. Bailey Dufrene was behind the burst in the second quarter, scoring five points on 2-of-3 shooting including one triple.

Dufrene started the second half with another three-pointer, but Southern Virginia junior Morgan Hartvigsen burst out of the second half for the home team, cutting the lead back to 21 at 68-47. Hartvigsen buried a three-pointer after a layup and short jumper in the early run for the Knights. CNU settled in, though, and responded by not allowing the Knights to get the lead under 20.

CNU coasted through the fourth and final quarter to finish off its tenth straight win. Anitra Thomas led the Captains with 15 points, while five other players finished in double figures. Dufrene and Bonivel added 14, a new career high for the latter, while Devon Byrd added 13, Sam Porter had 11 and Jessica Daguilh chipped in 10.  Porter finished two rebounds shy of a double-double while Byrd also grabbed six boards. Makeda Wrright finished with nine points and seven assists in her finest effort of the season, adding four rebounds and two steals.

CNU forced 40 Southern Virginia turnovers, picking up 22 steals along the way. The Knights ended up shooting 58.3% from the field, a season-high for a CNU opponent, but were limited to just 48 attempts from the field while CNU took 81 shots. Hartvigsen had 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting while Autumn Cramer, who left the game early with an injury, added a game-high 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting.

The Captains will return to action on Saturday as they host Penn State Harrisburg at 2:00 pm. It is the second of a five-game stretch over the next 11 days.
