Providence, R.I.-Senior forward Devin Hill (Danielson, CT) and junior guard Alex Moore (West Newbury, MA) combined for 40 points and 15 rebounds as the Rhode Island College topped rival Plymouth State, 55-42, in Little East Conference women's basketball action played at The Murray Center on Saturday afternoon.

 

Both teams struggled offensively in the first quarter, with the Panthers (6-11, 0-7 LEC) holding a two-point, 10-8, lead with 2:04 left in the opening frame following a made free throw by junior guard Madison Beatrice (Newton, MA). The Anchorwomen (4-11, 2-5 LEC) sent the game into the second quarter tied at 10 following a made jumper by Hill with 1:25 left in the frame.

 

The second quarter saw the Anchorwomen open up a slight lead, with a layup by Hill with 4:39 left in the stanza putting RIC up by six, 18-12. The hosts weres able to increase the lead to 10 points, 24-14, following a pair of made free throws by freshman forward Molly Phillips (Cranston, RI) with 30 seconds left in the quarter, but a pair of made free throws by PSU senior guard Leah Swanson (Atkinson, NH) trimmed the lead down to eight, 24-16, entering halftime.

 

RIC shot 22.6 percent (7-for-31) from the floor in the half, while the Panthers shot just 17.9 percent (5-for-28).

 

The third quarter is where the Anchorwomen took control of the game, with three straight three-pointers by Moore pushing the RIC advantage to 16, 35-19, in the opening 2:16 of the quarter. A late trey by Moore extended the lead to 24, the largest of the period, but Plymouth State was able to chip away at the deficit and went into the fourth quarter down by 22, 48-26.

 

RIC further extended its lead in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, with a layup by sophomore forward Rybecca Gonzalez (Pawtucket, RI) putting the Anchorwomen up, 55-27, with 5:35 left in the contest. With the starting lineup on the bench, PSU cut into the deficit and finished with a 13 point setback.

 

RIC shot 31.7 percent (19-for-60) from the field, 28.0 percent (7-for-25) from three-point range and 55.6 percent (10-for-18) from the charity stripe in the game. Hill led the way with 23 points and seven rebounds to go along with six blocks. Moore posted 17 points and eight rebounds. Phillips led all rebounders with 10 to go along with six points.

 

Plymouth State was held to 23.6 percent (13-for-55) shooting from the floor, 27.8 percent (5-for-18) from long range and 55.0 percent (11-for-20) from the charity stripe. Swanson, senior guard Taylor Perry (Simsbury, CT) and freshman guard Brittany Roache (Londonderry, NH) paced the Panthers' attack with eight points apiece.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference play at Western Connecticut on Wednesday, Jan. 27 (5:30 p.m.).
