Women's Basketball Pulls Away for 60-42 Victory

WINCHESTER, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan outscored the Shenandoah University women's basketball team in each quarter Wednesday night to capture a 60-42 road victory in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play. The game pitted two of the best ODAC rookies in Shenandoah's Shannon Kuhn and VWC's Jayla Harris.

The Marlins took their first lead when Raya Berkley's jumper made the score 9-8. Virginia Wesleyan led the rest of the way. Kelly Jones followed Berkley's attempt with a three-pointer on the next possession for a 12-8 lead.

Shenandoah attempted to keep the game close throughout, waiting for a final run. The Hornets closed to within four points of the Marlins in the fourth quarter and trailed by just five after Kuhn's layup made the score 47-42 with 5:14 to play.

The Marlins iced the game on a 13-0 run, holding the hosts scoreless the remainder of the quarter for the final margin.

Kuhn led Shenandoah (4-12/1-6) with 14 points and seven rebounds. Erin French corralled 10 rebounds as Olivia Callan contributed three assists and three steals.

Jones posted 18 points for the Marlins while Harris finished with 15. Naeemah Morris collected a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

The Marlins shot 41.5% from the floor while holding Shenandoah to a 29.5% shooting effort, including an 0-for-10 mark from three-point range.

Virginia Wesleyan (6-10/4-4) hosts Randolph College (3-13/1-6) on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in ODAC action. Stay tuned to Virginia Wesleyan Athletics for information on Saturday's contest as the impending snowstorm could force changes.
