Harvey's Basket Seals Win for Randolph

ROANOKE, VA – Rebecca Harvey hit a layup with two seconds remaining to give the Randolph College women's basketball the 65-64 win over Hollins University on Wednesday night.  The WildCats earned their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win of the year.

The 'Cats dominated the early goings, as they jumped out to a 10-2 lead less than five minutes in.  Harvey scored twice, while Korin HarrisJacqueline Hockman, and Taylor Samuels all added for the visitors.  The hosts then scored four of the next five to cut the deficit to 11-6 with 4:52 remaining in the first.  But despite a few series with no baskets by either team, Randolph would extend its lead before the second period.  Hockman made a jumper before a turnover put Abigail Bullins in position to hit a three, pushing the advantage to 10.  After an exchange of free throws, Brie Holdren hit a jumper to give the WildCats a 19-7 lead going into the second.

HU started the second quickly, scoring six of the first eight.  Samuels stopped the small run with a three, to give Randolph the double-digit lead back.  But once again, Hollins went on a small burst, outscoring the visitors 8-2 to bring the score to 26-21.  However, the 'Cats answered as Samuels and Bullins hit back-to-back jumpers.  Bullins then hit a free throw before Deana Campbell did the same on the other end.

Bullins continued her scoring ways, knocking down another three, before a jumper by Samuels to extend the advantage to 14.  HU continued to fight and tallied the final seven of the half, bringing the score to 36-29 in favor of Randolph.

Jewellanna Parfitt hit a jumper out of the intermission, but Harvey responded right away with her own.  Harvey added two from the line, however the hosts combined for six straight to cut the deficit to three.  The teams continued to trade points, with Randolph regaining a seven-point advantage thanks to Bullins.  Then HU stormed back towards the end of the period and finished the third period down one.

Hollins took the lead to start the fourth off a three by Parfitt.  Sally Sroge hit a jumper to push the host's advantage to four.  Harvey and Bullins combined for four but Parfitt dropped in six points to extend the HU lead to six with 6:20 remaining.

The 'Cats began to chip away at the deficit shortly after.  Harris hit a free throw and a layup, with Harvey adding a jumper to bring Randolph within one.  But Parfitt was there on the other end.  The two sides traded baskets, until Parfitt missed a shot from deep with 2:01 remaining.  Daijah Johnson converted on the other end to give the WildCats the 61-60 lead.

Harris added to it with 48 seconds left, but Sroge and Parfitt combined for four points to put Hollins up one with seven seconds left.  With the new rules, Randolph was allowed to move up the ball on a timeout.  That is when Harvey made a layup off a pass by Hockman to give the 'Cats a 65-64 win.

Harvey scored a career-high 19 points in the win.  Bullins and Samuels scored 15 and 11 respectively.  Harvey grabbed nine rebounds, while Hockman put in a solid night of work with 12 rebounds and seven assists.  Parfitt tallied a game-high 24 points for Hollins (3-11 overall, 0-7 ODAC).

Randolph (3-13, 1-6) may return to the road this weekend depending on the winter weather.  The WildCats are expected to play at Virginia Wesleyan College at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.  However, the game may change based on the weather.  Stay tuned to randolphwildcats.com for more information.
