Cortland Women Beat Plattsburgh to Move into Tie for SUNYAC Lead

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland outscored Plattsburgh 9-0 over the final two minutes and the Red Dragons defeated the Cardinals, 62-57, in a SUNYAC women's basketball contest. With the victory, Cortland (10-3) moves into a tie for first place in the league standings with a 5-1 conference mark.

Plattsburgh (8-5, 2-4 SUNYAC) took a 57-53 lead on a Monique Jones 3-pointer with 2:40 left. The scored stayed that way until Cassidy Chapko (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley) buried a 3-pointer with 1:25 remaining to close the gap to one.

Plattsburgh turned the ball over with 1:06 left, but Cortland missed a potential go-ahead shot with 52 seconds on the clock. The Cardinals, however, turned the ball over again with 49 seconds to go. On the ensuing inbounds play from underneath the basket, Danielle Levine (Holbrook/Sachem North) took a pass from Jennifer Deuel (Whitesboro) and hit a short jumper to put Cortland ahead.

After Plattsburgh missed a layup with 23 seconds to go, the Cardinals quickly committed three fouls to put Cortland into the bonus. Stephanie Rice (Duanesburg) made two free throws with 14 seconds left to extend the lead to three. Plattsburgh missed a potential game-tying trey with nine seconds left, and Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) iced the win with two free throws three seconds later.

Rice led Cortland with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, 3-of-6 from the 3-point range, and grabbed four rebounds. Chapko hit four of her eight 3-point attempts and finished with 14 points, four assists and three steals. Levine, Cohen and Taylor Miller (Freeport) each scored nine points, and Deuel ended with eight rebounds, seven steals and three assists.

Devona Paul, the SUNYAC's leading scorer, paced Plattsburgh with 26 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. She made her first eight shots, seven in the first half, and finished 12-of-17 from the field. Allie Taylor totaled 13 points, five rebounds and four steals and Jones ended with eight rebounds, five assists and five points.

Cortland shot 35 percent from the floor compared to 41 percent for Plattsburgh, but the guests committed 29 turnovers while Cortland lost the ball 15 times.

Cortland will travel to Geneseo on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
