Anchorwomen Fall to Southern Maine, 56-46

Providence, R.I.-Senior forward Devin Hill (Danielson, CT) notched a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, to go along with five blocks, as the Rhode Island College women's basketball team dropped a Little East Conference contest to Southern Maine, 56-46, at The Murray Center on Wednesday night.

 

The first quarter was a struggle for both teams, with the Huskies (8-6, 3-1 LEC) taking a 5-0 lead on a jumper by senior forward Megan Pelletier (Winslow, ME) with 7:00 minutes left in the opening stanza. The Anchorwomen (3-9, 1-3 LEC) cut the deficit down to one, 7-6, following a layup by junior guard Alex Moore (West Newbury, MA) 5:09 into the quarter. USM upped its lead to six, 12-6, but a three-pointer by Hill with two seconds left made the score 12-9 entering the second frame.

 

The Huskies extended their lead to 11, 22-11, following a pair of free throws by senior forward Ella Ramonas (Portland, ME) with 6:03 left in the half. RIC would cut the deficit to single digits on multiple occasions, but a pair of free throws by Ramonas with one second left extended the USM lead to 10, 29-19 entering the half.

 

RIC was held to just 22.2 percent (6-for-27) from the floor, while Southern Maine shot just 28.6 percent (10-for-35).

 

RIC opened the second half on a run, with a jumper by freshman forward Molly Phillips (Cranston, RI) trimming the deficit down to five, 32-27, with 5:54 in the stanza. The teams battled back and forth down the stretch with the Huskies taking a 39-32 lead into the fourth quarter.

 

USM held the course for the remainder of the game, extending its lead to as large as 12, 56-44, following a pair of free throws by Pelletier with 36 seconds left in the game.

 

The Anchorwomen shot 29.1 percent (16-for-55) from the field, 28.6 percent (4-for-14) from downtown and 50.0 percent (10-for-20) from the free throw line. Sophomore guard Jessa Rubera (Newton, MA) chipped in 11 points and a game-best five assists.

 

USM shot 30.2 percent (19-for-36) from the floor, 33.3 percent (7-for-21) from three-point range and 61.1 percent (11-for-18) from the charity stripe. Senior guard Gretchen Anderson (Kittery Point, ME) led all scorers with 16 points to go along with five rebounds. Pelletier finished with 12 points and five boards, while Ramonas scored 10 to round out the Huskies in double figures.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference play at Keene State on Saturday, Jan. 16 (1 p.m.).
