York (Pa.) Rebounds from Saturday Setback with Road win at SMC

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – The York College women's basketball team rebounded from Saturday's first conference loss of the year as they downed St. Mary's College 67-57 on the road Wednesday night in St. Mary's City.

The Spartans improve to 12-2 overall and 6-1 in the league while the Seahawks fall to 4-10 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

The Seahawks controlled the opening 10 minutes of the game as they led 12-9 after the opening quarter. It could have been worse but Beth Wiseley (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) converted a three-point play with 46 seconds left in the first to bring the Spartans to within three after one period.

The Spartans trailed 19-15 with less than 4:38 remaining in the half. The Spartans ripped off a 15-4 run to end the quarter as the Spartans took a 30-23 lead at the intermission. The run was keyed by two three pointers from Sam Mocniak (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's Annapolis) and seven points in from Wiseley as the Spartans seized control of the game.

The Seahawks battled back in the third quarter as they erased a 39-32 Spartan lead with a 10-2 spurt to take a 42-41 lead with 3:18 remaining in the quarter. The final minutes of the quarter would bounce back and forth as the Seahawks took a 48-45 lead to the final quarter.

The Seahawks took their final lead of the game on an Anna McClain lay up with 6:50 left in the game as they had a 52-49 advantage. The Spartans held their hosts off the board for the next 3:39 as they scored 10 straight points to seize a 59-52 lead. St. Mary's scored the next three points to trim York's lead to four but the Spartans scored eight of the final 10 points of the game to earn the road win. York was 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final two minutes of the game. York had a huge edge in the second and fourth periods as they outscored St. Mary's 43-20 in those two quarters.

York was very balanced led by junior Morgan Golec (Abington, Md./Patterson Mill) as she made her return to the Spartan line up a successful one with 13 points, three rebounds, and two assists in her 21 minutes of action. Golec, who missed the last two games due to a concussion, led a bench brigade that accounted for 35 points in the win. Wiseley continued her strong play as the freshman tallied 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal in her 21 minutes of play. Junior Sam Hruz (White Marsh, Md./Mercy) was the third Spartan to reach double figures with 12 points while she also had five rebounds, a game-high seven blocked shots and four steals in 30 minutes.

Morgan Kuehne (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and Katie Wagner (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) each added nine points to the Spartan effort.

Kerri Kline paced the Seahawks with a game-high 17 points including 3-of-6 from distance. Nina Haller was the other Seahawk in double figures with 10 points. McClain added nine points, nine rebounds, and four blocked shots in the loss.

York shot a smooth 48% from the floor including four threes while they also went 11-for-15 from the line led by Wagner's 5-for-6 performance. St. Mary's shot 36.5% with five threes and a 6-for-9 performance from the stripe.

York committed just 14 turnovers in the win, a marked improvement from Saturday's 25 turnovers.

The Spartans head back out on the road Saturday when they make the long trip to Newport News, Virginia to take on the Christopher Newport Captains. Game time from the Freeman Center is set for 2:00 pm.
