Nazareth surges past Houghton, 76-59

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior Sam Sorge scored in double figures for the 11th consecutive contest, notching a game-high 23 points (9-for-23) to propel Nazareth to a 76-59 victory over Houghton College Tuesday night.

The Golden Flyers improve to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while Houghton drops to 6-7 and 0-4, respectively.

Nazareth built a 14-10 lead after the first quarter. 

The Golden Flyers went over four minutes without a field goal, beginning in the first quarter, which allowed the visitors to seize a 19-15 lead.

Nazareth's first field goal of the second quarter came on a 3-pointer from Sam Sorge five minutes in to make it 19-18.

Lindsey Kelly was fouled at the end of the period and drained both free throws as Nazareth led 30-29 at the break.

In the third quarter, Nazareth came alive from 3-point range draining five treys.  Sorge connected as time expired for her second of the quarter to make it 54-44 heading into the final frame.  Kelly Broderick drained two triples and Samantha Peebles tallied one in the quarter.

The Golden Flyers kept rolling, scoring 22 points in the final 10 minutes, and maintained at least a 10 point advantage the rest of the game. 

Peebles tallied a career-high with 16 points (5-for-9), while adding five rebounds and four steals.

Kelly was 8-for-10 for 20 points and pulled down nine boards. 

Veronica Peck chipped in nine points, while Broderick finished with six.

Nazareth returns to the court on Thursday at 8 p.m. when it hosts St. John Fisher for the Battle of the Beaks.
