Caulder and Chauvin lead Sewanee to 75-56 win over rival Rhodes

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Jan. 10, 2016) – A game-high 27 points by senior Jamie Chauvin, along with 21 points from freshman Corey Caulder, led the Sewanee women's basketball team to an impressive 75-56 win over Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Rhodes, Sunday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.

The Tigers earned their first conference win of the season and are now 9-5 overall. The Lynx fell to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in SAA play,

After Rhodes led 8-0 behind three straight makes to start the game, Sewanee slowly chipped away at its deficit the rest of the first quarter.

Four straight points by Chauvin pulled Sewanee to within four, 8-4, with 7:23 left in the opening quarter. Haley McDonough then made a layup two possessions later.

Eventually, Rhodes led by two, 15-13, at the end of the first after Caulder hit a jumper with five seconds left.

The Tigers quickly took their first lead of the game within the next 45 seconds. After Rhodes pushed its advantage to five, seven straight points by Chauvin gave the Tigers a 20-18 advantage.

The Lynx took their final lead of the first half when Erin Deery hit a jumper with 5:19 left. From there, Sewanee outscored its rival 13-4 to close the second quarter.

A big reason for Sewanee's 33-24 halftime lead was the play of Chauvin and its defense. The Nashville, Tenn., native had 13 first-half points while the Tigers forced 16 Rhodes turnovers.

In the final 20 minutes of action, Sewanee never looked back. The Tigers built a 17-point lead in the third quarter.

Rhodes did play better in the fourth. The Lynx rallied over the first three minutes to pull to within three, 53-50, with 7:05 left. However, the Tigers answered right back with a jumper from Chauvin and a three byCaulder. Caulder's three was set up by a key steal from classmate Sue Kim. Chauvin then made another jumper which pushed the Tiger advantage back to 10.

The Tigers eventually built their lead to as much as 22 with 2:00 left.

Overall, Sewanee made 44.3 percent of its attempts. They also forced 26 Rhodes turnovers while limiting the Lynx to a 38.2 field goal percentage.

Along with Chauvin and Caulder, freshman Bella Taylor finished in double figures with 11 points.

Forward Symone Daniels led Rhodes with 10 points while Kramer pitched in eight and 10 rebounds.

Sewanee returns to action with a 1:00 p.m. contest January 16th against rival Centre.
