Bullins Scores her 1000th but the WildCats Rally Comes up Short

WINCHESTER, VA – Abigail Bullins scored her 1,000th-career point on a jumper with 1:06 remaining in the game, but the Randolph College women's basketball team could not complete the comeback against Shenandoah University on Saturday.  The Hornets won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest 79-71.

The Hornets opened up the game with 9-4 run, as Korin Harris and Alexis Calloway were the scorers for the WildCats.  The run was stopped by Bullins, as she converted two consecutive layups, with the second one coming from Daijah Johnson.  Olivia Callan responded with a jumper, before Taylor Samuels and Jacqueline Hockman combined to take the lead for the 'Cats.  However, the teams would go into the second period tied at 13.

Bullins started the second off with a shot from behind the arc.  But, SU went on a 10-0 to take a six-point lead.  Rebecca Harvey stopped the streak with two free throws and Calloway hit a jumper to bring the WildCats within three.  The teams went back and forth over the remaining minutes, and Shenandoah took a 32-27 lead into the half.

Shannon Kuhn knocked down a three to open play for the Hornets.  It was answered by a traditional three-point play from Harris.  Hockman followed it with a layup, cutting the deficit to three.  But Shenandoah responded with a run to push the lead to nine.  Bullins and Hockman went back to back from close range bringing the score to 43-38.

However the Hornets scored another 10-0 run.  But Bullins made a three and Samuels hit a jumper to cut the deficit to 10 at the end of the third.  Following a SU free throw to start the fourth, Bullins and Harvey combined for five points to stop cut the disadvantage to six.

The teams then traded points, until Samuels and Hockman teamed for six-straight and cut the deficit to two points.  But once again, Shenandoah went on a run, and pushed its lead to 11.  The 'Cats then went on a run, which was culminated by the historic Bullins jumper.  Despite two Harvey layups in the final minute, SU hit seven free throws to seal the victory.

Bullins becomes the seventh WildCat in program history to break the century mark.  She is currently nine points behind sixth-place Sara Rechnitzer.

Hockman and Harvey also finished in double-figures with 13 and 14 points respectively.  Callan led Shenandoah (4-9 overall, 1-3 ODAC) with 20 points.  She completed her double-double with 10 assists.

Randolph (2-11,0-4) finishes its three-game road trip on Wednesday.  The 'Cats will travel across town for a basketball double-header at Lynchburg College (10-2, 3-0).  The women will play first at 5 p.m.
