Weems leads SVC past Westminster in PAC play

Jasmine Weems scored a career-high 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as the Saint Vincent women's basketball team rolled to a 69-47 victory over Westminster in conference action at the Carey Center.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, as SVC held a 9-4 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, SVC found its offensive rhythm, extending the lead out to 20 points (26-6).

The Bearcats took their biggest lead of the half, at 33-12, when Babette Sanmartin converted a free throw with 2:00 to play in the second. Westminster scored the final four points of the half, making the halftime score 33-16.

Saint Vincent kept things going in the third and fourth quarters, outscoring Westminster in each, 17-16 in the third and 19-15 in the fourth.

Saint Vincent shot 35.8 percent from the field (24-67), 8 of 25 from behind the three-point line (32 percent) and made 81.3 percent from the free throw line (13-16). Meanwhile, SVC held Westminster down, allowing the Titans to convert just 29 percent from the field for the game, while also forcing the Titans into 21 turnovers in the contest. SVC held a 47-42 advantage in rebounding.

Mara Benvenuti, Maria Morgan and Lucy Bujdos added 10 points each to help propel the Bearcats to the conference win. The 10 points was a career-best for Bujdos. Meanwhile, Hannah Carroll tied a career-high with four steals. Five Bearcats registered at least four assists, including Morgan, who totaled four. Benvenuti also chipped in five rebounds, three assists, three steals and committed no turnovers.

The Bearcats have now won four straight games overall. SVC sits at 7-4 overall and 2-2 in PAC play. Meanwhile, the Titans dropped to 0-10 overall and 0-4 in league action.

Saint Vincent is next in action when they travel to Waynesburg University on Wednesday, Jan. 6. The Bearcats and Yellow Jackets are set for a 5:30 p.m. tip at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
