Rowan Women's Basketball Raises Its Record To 11-0 With A 74-65 Victory Over Eastern At The Cabrini Holiday Classic

RADNOR, PA – The Rowan University women's basketball team raised its record to 11-0 with a 74-65 victory over Eastern University at the Cabrini Holiday Classic on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Profs have won 11 straight to start the season for the first time since the 1999-00 campaign when they began with 12 consecutive wins. The Eagles have an overall mark of 7-3. Cabrini College hosts Widener University in the other game. On Thursday, Dec. 31, Eastern faces Widener at noon and Rowan plays Cabrini at 2 p.m.
 
Forward Kate Matthews (gr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) accumulated 17 points and a season-high 17 rebounds. Guard Anyssa Sanchez (jr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) tallied 11 points. Guard/forward Kaitlin Schullstrom (gr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) chipped in with 10 points. Guard/forwards Alex Raring (so. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) and Melissa Lake (gr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) added nine and eight points respectively.
 
For Eastern, guard Taylor Price (so. Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) recorded 19 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Forward Emily Lavin (jr. Port Monmouth, NJ/Middletown N.) collected 15 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks. Guard Amanda Riif (so. Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) scored 11 points.
 
Rowan scored the first four points of the game on two free throws by Lake (9:11) and a layup by Sanchez (8:17). The Profs were ahead 8-6 (6:06) then used an 11-2 run to end the frame and take a 19-8 lead. Schullstrom, who hit a triple as the horn sounded from just inside half court, along with four other players scored during the spurt.
 
Guard Olivia Rulon (fr. Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) started the second quarter with a layup (9:37), which extended the Rowan advantage to 13 (21-8). The Profs were in front 28-17 (6:30) then Eastern scored four straight to trim the deficit to seven points (28-21) at the 5:48 mark. The Eagles trailed 34-27 with 2:20 on the clock. Rowan tallied seven of the final eight points of the quarter, including four by Raring, to take a 41-28 lead into the break.
 
Eastern collected the first six points of the third, cutting the lead to seven points (41-34) with 8:13 remaining. Price tallied four points and guard Taylor Azer (so. Wilmington, DE/Concord) had two. A three-pointer by forward Ashely Kurdziolek (fr. Mount Airy, MD/Mount Airy Christian) made the score 45-38 (5:17). Rowan recorded the next six points on layups by Matthews (5:08 and 4:00) and Crilley (4:27), giving the Profs a 13-point cushion (51-38). Rowan took its largest lead, 54-40 after a three-point play by Matthews (3:33). Eastern concluded the quarter with a 9-2 run, making the score 56-49 heading into the fourth.
 
Rowan used a 9-3 spurt to start the final quarter and held a 65-52 lead with 6:28 on the clock. Schullstrom collected five points. Eastern recorded eight of the next nine points to get back to within six points, 66-60 (4:47). The Profs maintained the advantage and came away with a nine-point victory.
